For the past few weeks, ex-SEN Fred Thompson has publicly flirted with running for President... There is a yearning for a "new Reagan" to woo conservatives and moderates into a grand coalition willing to win the War and embrace market-friendly reforms to the ever growing government. But the surprisingly strong support for Fred Thompson is more than just a yearning for a "true conservative." Here are a couple reasons F. Thompson is gaining traction where others are not:
1) There is no MAJOR issue where he is at odds with any conservative wing of the party. And Thompson is not a recent convert for political reasons on any major issue.
2) Thompson was outside politics from 2002-2008 when Republican stock went downhill. As a corollary, Thompson is not tied to President Bush or the current Senate in any way.
3) Thompson's ability to communicate ideas clearly and earnestly makes many think of Reagan's ability to win over people to ideas that are not necessarily popular...
4) Most people like a person who is not a career politician but is an educated and active citizen to be President
5) Thompson is probably the most conservative electable candidate...
Fred Thompson would immediately jump onto my shortlist.
Support for Guiliani is wide and shallow. F. Thompson is a big threat tho Guiliani's lead. McCain' 20% is actually a pretty solid group that probably won't grow or shrink much over the next 6-9 months. F. Thompson could take much of the Gingrich/Brownback/Huckabee support and coalesce it around himself. F. Thompson would be the most conservative of a Guiliani-McCain-Thompson race, but he would be moderate enough and independent enough to win over voters in a general election...
My prediction is that F. Thompson will run and will be a top tier candidate.

While you're at it, find me just one Senate vote where Thompson didn't vote pro-life. (And no, CFR votes don't count.)

I will go with the opinion of the National Right to Life organization over that of the AP.
Gingrich stepped in it today by submitted a friend of the court brief ON BEHALF OF Rep. William Jefferson (D-La).

I care about if he is "real" or not. A real Conservative who will stand up to the Rats and advance Conservatism in all ways in this nation. So I could care less what he and his wife look like.
Perhaps not on the Internet. Going back that far can cost money.
So, rather than pay for a bunch of Internet "Pay Per Views", or search the local library microfiche, I'll just ask you -- if you were running for office, and Abortion was important to you, and every News Report said that you favored the Legality of First-Trimester Abortion... don't you think you'd contest it?

National Right to Life says that Fred was Pro-Choice in the First Trimester in 1994. Does that count?
The cross stood for Thompson’s support for legal 1st Trimester abortion. He was generally pro-life, but supported abortion during the 1st trimester.

Just a point of History.
All you've shown are articles from 1994 that mention "Fred Thompson", and "abortion". Once again, no direct attributable quote.

Bad picture on a bad day. I’ve seen another photo of the couple right here a few days ago on FR and poster after poster were saying what a trophy wife he had. And I would have to admit the she did look pretty nice in the other picture.

From that photo, I think they both look like they've been on their feet for about 18 hours straight. Fred looks drawn and pale, and Jeri (who normally looks great) looks like her make-up is smudged and her dress is sagging.
But maybe they have been on their feet for 18 hours straight. At the end of the day, I'm voting on Constitutional issues, because I think Ron Paul is the best man running... not because Jeri Kehn-Thompson was caught in bad lighting at the end of what may have been a very long day. Big deal.
I can't support anyone who's soft on the war on terror like Paul is. He's so into his "Dr. No" persona that he refuses to fund legitimate government endeavors.
St. Martin said that she went down to Tennessee in 1994 to speak with Thompson personally when he first ran for Senate, and that she determined he was against abortion.
“I interviewed him and on all of the questions I asked him, he opposed abortion,” St. Martin said. She told me that the group went on to support him in that election, and his record reinforced for her that their determination was correct.
“He has a consistent voting record that is pro-life,” she said.
On the NRLC website, they archive their congressional ratings back to 1997, so they include six of his eight years in the Senate. Thompson took the pro-life position on every vote he cast on the abortion issue. The only reason he didn’t have a 100% rating is that, as Jim pointed out, the ratings also include votes on campaign finance reform, which he supported.
I specifically pressed her on the 1994 National Review story that read: “On abortion, both Thompson and Cooper are pro-choice. But Thompson favors parental notification, Cooper voted against it.” I also asked her about the 1996 AP story mentioning Thompson’s opposition to a constitutional amendment banning abortion.
St. Martin said she was skeptical of such media reports, because they can be wrong as was her experience with stories in 2000 that George W. Bush had been pro-choice. She reiterated the fact that she knows Thompson opposed abortion because of her conversation with him, and that was reinforced by his subsequent voting record.
That, and National Right to Life's review.
Beyond that, as I bolded, I'd have to pay-per-view or subscribe in order to retrieve the archived 1994 articles.
Since it's not worth it to me, I'll just go with the 1994 National Right to Life rating.
