DURHAM, N.C. -- -- Sitting on the stoop of his small wood-sided home, on a parcel of scrub pines carved from a former tobacco plantation, William Ragland, 76, said he wanted to see justice, and soon, in the Duke lacrosse case.

And that would mean putting on trial not the lacrosse players, but the district attorney who led the early prosecution of the case, said Ragland.

"I was shocked by how Mr. Nifong did the whole thing. It was a cover-up. He had evidence that these boys did not rape her," and improperly kept it secret, said Ragland.

The retired Durham Housing Authority maintenance supervisor has lived in the predominantly black South Central district for a half-century.

This area of modest homes and city housing projects, where 92 percent of the residents are black, is the kind of neighborhood Nifong supporters looked to in order to help re-elect him last November. Eighty percent of South Central's voters cast their ballots for him. But now, a year after an off-campus Duke lacrosse team party sparked charges of sexual assault and put the school and Durham under a national spotlight, many neighborhood residents said this week neither he nor the accuser, who used to live here, have earned their support.

It took a few media bytes to rile the masses into voting for Nifong. It will take a few more to reconcile them to the impending dismissal. I don't see this so much as either "damage control" or the NAACP's "spin" (which is not to say that the NAACP won't spin it). I see it more as trying to avoid or lessen the possibility of violent reaction to the dismissal.

I assure you the ABA has no love for prosecutors. The ABA is as left as they come. They would rally behind a defense attorney in a minute, but love to see prosecutors take a hit.

Nifong deserves to be disbarred for his misbehavior in this case. I just hate that it will give the ABA something to hold against all prosecutors. I am sure they will make up their own "culture of corruption" argument.

The left does not operate on facts. Facts are immaterial to them. It's what they FEEL that counts. It is not possible to convince someone who operates on feelings that reality is not what they feel. This is how many 'rat politicians get elected. It is frustrating.

If this had been a private attorney, the Bar would have sought an emergency disbarment and would have been working towards a permanent disbarment.

The ABA is a 100% VOLUNTARY organization. It has no regulatory power. Its closes act of officialdom is promulgating model laws or model rules for jurisdiction to use as a template.

The ABA is purly lobbying and a leftist one at that.

Most licensed lawyers are NOT members of the ABA.

I think that it is unfair to call all these Black people racists (though they may be on some level)because they were so ready to believe that the Duke lacrosse boys were guilty. It's an over simplification. These people are poorly educated, perpetual victims that are easily led by the media and community leaders to support the anti-white agenda of the liberal, post modern Democrats. After 150 years of free education, when is this situation going to change?

As another freeper posted, boat people come here with nothing but the shirt on their backs. After a year they own a couple of nail salons, a home and a BMW. Also they speak fluent English.
