Thompson Is for Real (Run, Fred, RUN!)

In just three weeks, Fred Thompson has transformed the contest for the Republican presidential nomination. It is not merely that he has come from nowhere to double digits in polls. He is the talk of GOP political circles because he is filling the conservative void in the field.

Republican activists have complained for months that none of the Big Three -- Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney-- fits the conservative model of a conservative leader for a conservative party. The party faithful have been waiting for another Ronald Reagan. But in conversations with them the past year, nobody mentioned Thompson as the messiah until he appeared March 11 on "Fox News Sunday."

Thompson was surprised by the reaction to his statement that he was "giving some thought" to running. In the first Gallup Poll that listed Thompson (conducted March 23-25), he scored 12 percent -- amazing for someone out of public life for more than four years who has not campaigned. More important is his backing within the political community. Buyer's remorse is expressed by several House members who endorsed Romney, the former Massachusetts governor.

How is it silly? I mean, how is it in any way untrue or misleading? I'll justify it by saying he did what he had to to save NYC from ruin, and if he needed to make some (very) strange bedfellows to do it, God bless him. And as a conservative Christian, I mean that. But now, if he wants still higher office, that is, if he wants to supplant another conservative in the role of GOP nominee, then he had better communicate to us, his constituents, what his real values actually are.

My "ideological" choice this year is anyone who can stop the Democrats from winning.

I think that Giuliani has a real chance to win against the present field of DNC candidates.

I also think that we haven't seen the real DNC candidate yet.

I'm hoping that it isn't Al Gore, because then I don't think any GOP candidate will win.

I'll admit it; I don't know his position on abortion. I know as a NYC mayor, he was pro-choice. I know before that, as a US attorney, he was pro-life. I know his reason for campaigning as pro-choice was a political calculation, but I also know he lost his Catholic faith, which had probably helped him to be pro-life. And I want to know which persona is the real Giuliani.

Guliani has indeed a quick wit and sharp intellect.

But FDT has a legal and philosophical intellect of the highest order. And that doesn't come out in his actor roles or his folksy broadcasts. Rather it is seen in his serious writings and analysis.

Since you're the vox populi of Middle America, maybe you can answer a question: Would a man who divorced his wife of 25 years promptly upon embarking on a Hollywood career be fit or unfit for the Presidency? Is your answer affected by the fact that that man's current wife is, by an amusing coincidence, 25 years his junior?

Some of us are trying to pick a President, and therefore don't give a damn about the divorces of Rudy, or Fred, or Newt, or McCain, or whoever else decides to throw his hat into the ring. If you're more interested in selecting a Marriage-Counselor-in-Chief, well, that's your prerogative, but in that case you really ought to do some research.

I know you weren't addressing me, but I had to chime in, ok? :)

It's just not fair to criticize Fred's votes on H1B visa'a. We have a certain amount of alloted entries, and he wants, and I want, to make sure they are educated and will contribute to our society. I know many, many immigrants who gained entry through the H1 programs, and each and every one of them strongly desire to become a citizen. Most of them that I know, are conservatives, too. So, it's not like Fred is saying throw the gates open and let everyone in, nor is he saying he wants "workers", he wants future citizens, and he wants to pick them. I agree. The only one that could even come close to being an issue is the so called "chain migration", (against simpson bill), that he voted to continue. But, read the bill, you'd veto is too.
The rest are dealing mainly with H1B's, and a legality that would allow employers to fire employees and bring in foreigners. It wouldn't stand up under challenge.

Pro-Choice...been there, s'plained that already.

I also believe Fred Thompson can. It's my belief that Thompson would be better for our country.

But- I don't think it's useful to make snide and insulting remarks to my FRiends who support Rudy, or Duncan Hunter or Romney..or..
