Two U.S. Soldiers Killed in Iraq, Iraqis Foil Car Bombs
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, April 6, 2007 Two American soldiers were killed in northern Iraq yesterday: one by gunfire in Kirkuk, another by an improvised explosive device in Diyala, defense officials said.
A second soldier was wounded in the first incident and two in the second. All of the soldiers were members of Task Force Lightning.
In other news, Iraqi troops foiled a suicide car bomb attempt on a checkpoint south of Baghdad, yesterday. The only casualties in the attack on soldiers of the 2nd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 8th Iraqi Army Division, were the two suicide bombers.
In Al Haswah, a vehicle approached an Iraqi Army checkpoint. The passenger of the vehicle got out and attempted to move surrounding concertina wire. Guards shot and killed the man. The driver of the vehicle then detonated the car bomb, officials said.
In Adamiyah, an improvised explosive device killed an Iraqi civilian and wounded two others yesterday. A route clearance team from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, observed the explosion that struck an Iraqi civilian vehicle. While responding, another IED struck a coalition vehicle. It wounded one soldier, who has returned to duty, officials said.
Terrorists launched another car bomb attack against the Sadr City Joint Security Station on April 4. The attack failed to kill or injure anyone at the facility.
Finally, Iraqi Army troops swept into Ad Diwaniyah April 6 to disrupt militia activity and return security and stability here back to the government of Iraq. Soldiers of the 8th Iraqi Army Division, supported by Multinational Division Baghdad troops, began Operation Black Eagle in response to the recent violence threatening to destabilize the region.
“Instead of showing instability and bowing to intimidation, the Iraqi government and its security forces have taken action and boldly responded to the militia threat,” said Army Col. Michael Garrett, commander of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division.
The decisive actions taken by the 8th Iraqi Army Division is just the beginning of the government’s plan to re-establish security in the area and create an environment where the government can improve the quality of life for the people of Ad Diwaniyah.”

Afghan National Police Repel Taliban Attack
American Forces Press Service
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, April 6, 2007 Two Afghan National Policemen were wounded today by small-arms fire during an attack on their patrol in Nahr Surkh District, Helmand province, but the Afghan police repelled the attack, officials said.
Coalition forces and members of the Afghan National Police were conducting a patrol to link up with other coalition troops when Taliban fighters engaged them with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades about 12 miles southeast of Gereshk. The combined patrol returned small-arms and mortar fire, which forced the Taliban fighters to retreat.
Both wounded men were stabilized by a medic on the scene and were later evacuated to a nearby medical facility for further treatment. They are currently listed in stable condition.
There were no injuries to any Afghan civilians reported during the engagement.
The Afghan National Police were courageous under fire against an unknown quantity of enemy personnel, said Maj. Christopher Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force-82 spokesperson.
The ANP have again demonstrated their commitment to bringing peace and stability to Afghanistan. This cowardly attack is another attempt to intimidate ANP members and terrorize Afghan civilians, Belcher said.
