This took place near the famous WW2 "slot" used by the Japanese and American Navies to attack each other. Also near Pappy Boyington's Black Sheep Corsair squadron on Munda.
Lots of WW2 history in these islands.
Key for quakes is to either be really advanced such that you're building high-quality buildings specifically engineered to be quake-proof, or so backwards theres hardly anything to fall on you.
Worst is 2nd world/3rd world shoddy concrete lowrise construction, like Pakistan, Turkey, Armenia, etc.

Big earthquakes in the Solomons tend to come in pairs, hours or days apart, too.

Not really any notable swarms last week and there were no quakes in the vicinity of this one of any note.
LOL !!
Global Warming! Bush's Fault! Quick, buy carbon credits!
Yes, going to Guadalcanal was one of my favorite cruises for that reason. We came south from Okinawa, passed through the Bouganville Strait into New Georgia Sound (The Slot) past Savo Island into Ironbottom Sound and anchored off Point Cruz on Guadalcanal. There was still a lot of old, rusted equipment around in 1986. I don't know what's left now in that climate.

BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER AND

OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN

I don't know. I hadn't heard anything.
Leading to the Christmas tsunami was a string of fairly large quakes all along the faultlines in that region. It got fairly bumpy all around Australia for some months and then came the 8.5. There have been some quakes along the fault lines since the last new moon. Deserves watching, especially the animals, who are apparently smart about these things.

Speaking of earthquakes, I see central AK has had 10 today. The last two just happened a few minutes ago. I check the AK earthquake site at least once a day. :)
3.8
There was one near Fort Yukon, which is kind of rare, and another near the future Alaska-Siberia bridge. It is somewhat active which is not surprising since it's the time of the FULL MOON. Ignore the expert who says there is no correlation.
Or, the snow slid off somebody's roof. :)
The tsunami followed after a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck in the New Georgia Islands region, which had prompted the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre to issue a tsunami warning.
Solomons police spokesperson Mick Spinks said there has been sketchy reports of damage caused by a tsunami in areas near the quake.
"There have been no reports of casualties yet but you have to bear in mind the communications with many areas is poor," Spinks said.
