Iraqi security forces, backed by Sunni tribesmen, clashed Sunday with a united of al-Qaida fighters near the Syrian border, killing at least 21 members of the terrorist organization, police said.
The fighting, near the border town of Qaim in Anbar province began after midnight and lasted several hours, said Col. Tariq Youssef, a police official in the city, 320 kilometers (200 miles) west of Baghdad.
The colonel said "a small number of the tribal fighters suffered minor wounds" and all 21 al-Qaida members in the unit were killed.
"The operation was launched by police forces backed by the Abu Faraj and Abu Shaaban tribes against members of al-Qaida," he said. "We believe that they were trying to flee the country because they are surrounded now in Anbar by the growing number of tribes that reject al-Qaida."
An increasing number of Sunni tribes in Anbar province, a stronghold of the insurgency, have joined with the government and U.S. military to expel al-Qaida from the region.

Excellent news! I wonder what the future jihadists coming into Iraq will think once it becomes common knowlwdge that the Iraqis are killing them as they come into their country?
I hope this doesn't affect Nancy Pelosi's visit to Syria. I can't wait to see her telling the US military to "calm down", along with the hand motions. Same thing for the Iraqi government.

One thing al-Qaeda excels at; making new enemies.
With this series of dirty chemical bombings a war between al-Qaeda and the tribes in Anbar is no longer a possibility. It just became a fact.
I've read at least two very optimistic reports from al-Almada in the last week about purported victories of the tribes and police over al-Qaeda in Ramadi and Fallujah. I was reluctant to trust the accuracy of the reports which sited unnamed sources but now seeing the reaction of al-Qaeda suggests that the action of the tribes was so painful that al-Qaeda retaliated in the way we see today.
Al-Qaeda's terrorists-whom AP insists on calling insurgents-expended three suicide bombers and precious resources against their supposedly sympathetic civilian Sunni hosts instead of American and Iraqi soldiers and Shia civilians; their usual enemies.
If this indicates anything it indicates that al-Qaeda's is reprioritizing the targets on the hit list. The reason: al-Qaeda is sensing a serious threat in the change of attitude of the tribes toward them and perhaps the apparently successful meeting of the sheiks with Maliki and the agreements that were made then was the point at which open war had to be declared.
The tribes in Anbar are stubborn and they have many ruthless warriors. That's a proven fact and it looks like Al-Qaeda had just made their gravest mistake—their once best friends are just about to become their worst enemy.
Also I am surprised that Associated (with terrorists) Press is reporting this.
Every time the words "Al Qaida" appears in a headline, it's a small victory over those who wish to pretend that the activity in Iraq is "sectarian violence". Love it!

GSlob the tribal war with al-Qaeda is very real. This while good is nothing compaired to the losses al-Qaeda took three weeks ago fighting the tribes with 100 dead al-Qaeda fighters and 50 captured in one day.
This outstanding news out of Iraq will not be reported in tomorrow's Houston Chronicle.

It remains to be answered: were the al Qaeda terrorists on their way out of Syria to the war zone, or were they on their way back to Damascus to meet with Nancy Pelosi, infidel represenative for surrender?
I haven't seen or heard any news about Granny Pelosi and her trip to Syria. Maybe it's not going too well?
What are the rules of engagement for this operation?
