My Son just turned 30 last July. He is showing signs of acknowledging that he was robbed of a balanced education while he attended American University in Washington DC.

I frequently challenged him on citing the source of his “facts” in our debates. He would accuse me of having a closed mind in not seeing his “obvious” truths. My counter was always to ask for logic in our discussions as opposed to wishes in his arguments. He never won one of our discussions and he would never admit that he lost. He was torn.

I found that a very successful tact of mine that got through to him was in his passion of denouncing everything that is wrong, I asked him to state what his politically philosophy was for? What did he espouse as what we should be working toward and how should we get there. Between 9/11 and some of the frauds that have come out of the woodwork and the absolutely false and wrong things said by some of the leaders in the Democratic party, he is struggling with his convictions. It is also very unsettling to him that he baby sister (20) is a logical thinker and debunks a lot of his pseudo intellectual mutterings. My Little Girl is re-educating her brother. It is a rewarding thing to see.

Brian will come around and it will be his little sister that will offer him a helping hand. My Daughter goes to Rutgers University! A pretty liberal institution, but by its very liberalness (is there such a word??) has strengthened her convictions that it is more important to “think” than “feel”.

I done good with her!

Rutgers is also home to many of the foremost traditional family scholars in the U.S.

Go, Rutgers!

I've seen several examples now of young liberals considering themselves "open minded" for believing as they do...even if they completely reject everything about an opposing view or argument coming from the right. How exactly is that open minded? Nothing wrong with strongly believing in ones beliefs...but that, in and of itself, does not make a person open minded. Not sure how much sense my babble is making right now but the comment about your son informing you that you have a "closed mind" reminded me of this pet peeve I have. Liberals have the same propensity for having a closed mind as any conservative...they just don't view it that way.

that it is more important to “think” than “feel”.

That is the core distinction between the two world views. One is based on logic and facts, the other on emotions and wishes.

Remind your son that emotions are in the subconscious and thinking is in the conscious part of the brain.

Age 30 is time to start relying the higher level functions of the brain. At least, this is what I tell my 30 year old son, who has been subjected to left coast radicalism all his life, except for his contacts with his parents!
