LONDON Britain examined options Sunday for new dialogue with Tehran over the seized crew of 15 sailors and marines, as a poll suggested most Britons back the government's goal of resolving the standoff through diplomacy.
Government and defense officials refused to discuss a report that claimed a Royal Navy captain or commodore would be sent to Tehran as a special envoy to negotiate the return of the personnel.
The official would deliver an assurance that British naval crews would never deliberately enter Iranian waters without permission, the Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported.
Britain's Foreign Office and Ministry of Defense said they would not comment on negotiations or on options being considered. "We will continue to conduct our diplomatic discussions in private," a Foreign Office spokesman said on the government's customary condition of anonymity.
But Transport Minister Douglas Alexander said Britain was engaged in "exploring the potential for dialogue with the Iranians."
"The responsible way forward is to continue the often unglamorous, but important and quiet diplomatic work to get our personnel home," Alexander told the British Broadcasting Corp.'s Sunday AM program.

Well, if the British are gonna be such pu**ies, I say WE start pushing them around.
You do a grave disservice to Neville Chamberlain. Chamberlain at least genuinely believed that he was securing peace. Blair cannot possibly have any illusions that sending a Royal Navy officer to lick the mullahs' boots will do anything but strengthen the hardliners in Iran, emboldening them to destablize Iraq further and continue their nuclear program. Chamberlain was a well-meaning fool; Blair is a calculating, feckless coward.
"Britain Mulls Options for Dialogue With Iran" I doubt it, after reading this article "UK Embassy Under Attack" http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-1258555,00.html
They're attacking the embassy because they know Brits are appeasers and won't do anything about it. Brits may even offer them a couple thousand each protester to leave.
Maybe so... but results from such behavior is always identical. It would have been interesting to see how Chamberlain would have behaved during the war... since he died before most of it happened.
I knew he would cave. All those words he used to the media got him NOTHING. Did he think those words woudl scare Iran? I am deeply, sadly disappointed in Tony Blair. I thought he had come from meager to strong but now he is not only back to meager but he now weak in the eyes of the world. It is up to the USA to protect ourselves and forget about being the savior of everyone else. God bless USA!
Once those failed, we were told it was "ok to weigh in"
From the start Bush has deferred to Blair in the handling of this particular issue.
Well there is this one! I posted on another thread, where you can see two differing views!

Personally I am disgusted they were taken so easily in the first place. I think the Captain of HMS Cornwall should be court marshalled for incompetence.
The British better read their history books and learn real quick that their current tactics are doomed to failure. Ask Jimmah Carter about his hair-brained negotiations with Iran and their failure. Jimmah Carter the pride of the DemoRAT party.
Considering which British party Blair is nominal head of, I think he's done a fine job, and been a good ally. I would have expected the Labour party, more akin to US 'Rats than otherwise, to have thrown in the towel a couple of years ago.
Even the pilot in command of the helicopter that was overhead, unless it wasn't armed, bears some responsibility as well.
Here! Here!
Copy that. I get so confused over Blair. He's really a good guy, IMHO.
I would just like to see him be a lot tougher, especially when it comes to British national security.
We (the Brits and us) are in this together, and I would sure like to see a united stand; a very strong united stand.
