Texas FReepers, Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 21, 12:00 Noon.

We are so very fortunate that Freeper "leofl" has arranged to give us a tour of Fort Hood. Fort Hood is located near Killeen, West of I-35 exits at Temple, Belton area. Thanks so much Leo, for making this happen. Please note if you are interested in joining us. We're still working on a few details but for now here's Leo's note to us......

"I will take you on-post to both the 1st Cav museum and the 4th ID area. I will also show you some of the sights and maybe sounds of Fort Hood. Bring your cameras as you can take pictures at the museums. Other places are clearly marked and I assure you you will have a great time. This is a family friendly outing but there are some things everyone should know.

Fort Hood is now a restricted base. We can get on-base but be sure to bring:

A copy of your insurance card and registration for your automobile

Proper Government ID ie driver's license, State id etc

Do not bring any weapons even if you are a CCL licensee. This is federal property and it makes the guys with bigger guns crazy!!! lol

A fun attitude and a comfortable pair of walking shoes.

Children are welcome and appreciated!!! Let them see what some of our brave heroes are doing to protect their future. Besides I'm a big kid at heart!!"

I remember Rick from 9/11. What a hero - he cared for everyone but himself. I'll remember all you fine heroes when we visit Fort Hood. Wish you could join us.

Thanks for your selfish service to our country. Where is the 1st Cav now?

We moved here about a year and a half ago and I *love* it! Central Texas is a great place to raise a family.

We all need even a little bit of your spirit toward our military. I see you were at the Rick statue unveiling ceremony in Georgia. Did you know each other?

Thanks for sharing.

Just received an email from leofl. He wants us to meet at his office as there's lots of parking space and carpool to on site.

This was quite a while ago now so I don't remember the names of all the places I visited in the fort. I was working with a military contractor. We were doing some work for the 9th Infantry Division (which no longer exists). Their headquarters reminded me of a typical corporate building (except for the tanks out in front). I was shown around the more densely populated part of the post with various unit headquarters, housing, etc. We also drove pretty far out into the fort on unpaved roads. There are a number of places where there are fords across streams with signs warning that quite a few people have been killed in flash floods. There was an exercise going on at the time, although I think it was concluding. I saw a lot of tanks and also something I had never heard of before, "tank-retrieval vehicles" which look like extra-large tanks and are basically tank tow-trucks. Unfortunately I spent most of my time working in various non-descript buildings on the post while I was there.

One amusing sidelight: One day I overheard a major on the phone complaining loudly that the general's wife wouldn't allow any more naked women in the officer's club. Someone told me that this is part of a fight that goes back for years in the military.

As for the mud, even though I didn't take my own rental car into the mudier parts of the fort, it still accumulated so much mud that I thought I'd better take it to a car wash before returning it. The mud was very difficult to remove.

Welcome to the Cedar Park area. I live in Lago Vista, about 1/2 mile from Lake Travis. You will enjoy that area. It is one of the more Conservative areas in the Austin metro area.

Exits 299 - 306 on I-35 in Temple will get you to Ft Hood. There are directional signs located at every exit. If you have never been to Ft Hood, then I suggest you take this opportunity.

Next, make a visit to Brooks Army Medical Center:

and visit a few of our brave.

It's a LONG drive around I guess. Is that what u mean?

Yes, it a long drive for people in Gatesville who have to work in the Killeen area. Instead of the 40 or so miles, it's more like 60 miles. I'd like to go to this, but have a cardio appointment that day. Got to have the ticker checked out and BP monitored again.

Gracey:

Thanks for the invite. Unfortunately I have to decline. My son's Scout troop has a service project at the San Jacinto battlefield on April 21. Otherwise I would be there will bells on. If this ever happens again, let me know. I will come if I am free.

Will the tour include the horse stables and the horse cavalry unit at Ft. Hood? If not, you might suggest to the host that he add that, too. (True it is 1st Cav and not 4th ID. Still . . .)

Excellent point. We should do that. Do you live close to the new hospital? Would you like to help organize a visit there? We have several freepers that live in S.A. or close proximity and the H.O.T, Chapter is not too far away either.
