Campaign 2008: Meet the 'Law & Order' Candidate
MSNBC/Newsweek ^ | 03/31/07 | Holly Bailey

April 9, 2007 issue - It looks as if Fred Thompson is getting ready to run for president. Friends of the former Tennessee senator turned actor (anonymous to protect their relationship) say he's increasingly tempted to enter the 2008 Republican primaries, fueled in part by new polls that show he's got a serious shot at the White House. A Gallup poll released last week found Thompson ranked No. 3 behind front runners Rudy Giuliani and John McCain with 12 percent support among Republicans—all before he's even formally launched a campaign. Last week Thompson was spotted in Washington lunching with former Senate majority leader Bill Frist, who has publicly urged his longtime friend to run for president. On April 18, Frist and Tennessee Rep. Zach Wamp will host Thompson on Capitol Hill, where he'll meet with House and Senate members to discuss his possible candidacy. Wamp, who heads a draft-Thompson committee, told NEWSWEEK that so many lawmakers have expressed interest in the meeting that organizers had to reserve a bigger room and extend Thompson's visit from one hour to almost a full day. "I really believe he's in," Wamp says. "I think it's only a matter of him getting his personal affairs in order".

Fred seems to be doing well enough without even announcing yet. The fear I smell is when he does announce the Giuliani support will wither away.

No "That Guy from Law and Order." works

It gets the Republicans so scared of Hillary, that they'll vote for anybody.

It get the voters in the centre why find McCoy more palatable than Hillary, and are prepared to vote for a moderate Republican

And it gets the voters who know who Fred Thompson really is.

"Like I said in the earlier post, Hillary isn't even going to be the candidate."

That's a prossibility, of course.

"I would like a real conservative to win... (That eliminates Rudy, since he's a liberal)"

Absolutely. Consider this: Regardless of who the dem candidate is, too much importance is given to Hillary as the biggest threat to begin with. It's not Hillary we worry about. It's the democrats, for they are ALL out to destroy the country. They are ALL a threat. Truth be known, Hillary is just a novice. No class. No talent. She is just another name for all that's wrong with the democrat party.

What we need, nay, what the nation needs is a person who can unite the Republican Party and attract conservatives regardless of what party they belong to. We need all the cross-over votes we can get.

So who can best do that?

That is the real issue and the real challenge here. Hillary's come and Hillary's go, but the democrat party will remain and continues to rot. Time to purge American politics of these stinking socialists who are hell-bent on destroying our Sovereign Republic and building a nanny state.

O.K., I know that you know that you have the picture of the "wrong" Law and Order guy. That is a picture of Sam Waterston who is very active in the Unity 08 (online political pary)movement. Am I missing something here?

Check it out. www.unity08.com

Someone said Fred should change his name to "That Law and Order Guy", and someone else was pointing out that that could mean OTHER "Law and Order Guys".

If you pay close attention, he's sucking support from Romney, not Giuliani.

Be honest. Are you, as a Giuliani fan, at all worried about Thompson?

So far his impact has been on Romney and Hunter even among Freepers (check current poll). If Thompson fails to run, he will likely have squashed these two as contenders, leaving no one to take on Giuliani and McCain. Newt is not going to run. The other wannabees dont stand a chance.

Nor do I hate Rudy. He's one of the few liberals who have recently held public office that I consider to be "one of the good guys."

The others are Joe Lieberman and Zell Miller. All three are JFK-style liberals in the clasical tradition - strong on defense, crime and a few fiscal issues, yet very far to the left on all social and most economic issues. God bless 'em, they're a disappearing breed.

I wouldn't want to see any of the three living in the White House, but I still feel there are ways in which each could make a positive contribution to their country in a Fred Thompson administration:

Guiliani - Attorney General
Lieberman - Last UN Ambassador before post eliminated
Miller - Last Sec'y Education before cabinet post elimnated

I'm genuinely curious. As a "neo-libertarian", who do you agree with on the issues more, Giuliani or Thompson?

The only candidate I will work for, raise money for and give my money to is Fred Thompson

you and a legion of others. a reluctant pull of the lever for rudy isn't going to win the election for him. people are enthused and energized about Fred, whereas the majority of republicans are praying to God that they don't have to hold their nose and vote for Rudy.

I really don't hate Rudy, I just hope there is a better option

again, this is the position of the majority of freepers. we are accused of being rabid and foaming at the mouth anti-rudys, but the sad truth is, we just think he is NOT the candidate who should be the republican nominee. i bear rudy no ill will, i think he'd be great in the cabinet as Homeland Security head.
