Sailor Seizure 'Inexcusable' Updated: 22:33, Saturday March 31, 2007

Iran's seizure of 15 Royal Navy personnel has been described as "inexcusable behaviour" by US President George Bush.

In his first comments on the crisis, Mr Bush said he supported Britain's diplomatic efforts to get the captives back.

He said: "Iran must give back the hostages. They're innocent, they did nothing wrong, and they were summarily plucked out of water."

Thank you Mr President.

More of the same would do quite nicely.

Those Brits should have been under orders to shoot, but, of course, they weren't. And what is the result? Another lengthy hostage crisis! Enough is enough! Either toughen up or fade away!

The troops had pistols, the iranians had machine guns.

It would have been a blood bath, with OUR BLOOD.

Thank you Mr President... but next time, use a line from the Gipper. "The bombing begins in 5 minutes"

"The troops had pistols, the iranians had machine guns."

Outgun me once, shame on you. Outgun me twice, shame on me. Hopefully someone "over the pond" will understand that.

UKrepublican, I did not notice any mention of the Geneva Convention by the US President. Perhaps that is because there is no declared war between states, but parading hostages before cameras and such definitely breaks Convention rules. I would hope that the Iranians are held to that standard regardless -- as they seem to regard the claimed incursion by UK Marines as an act of war against Iran. I expect stronger public words from my country on behalf of its primary ally. Perhaps that is happening away from public view.

There wouldn't be a twice, they'd all be dead.

This gives me a nice opportunity to confront sean hannity on the nonsense he has been spreading. I'm a bug fan of his, but his smears unto the MOD about orders to stand down etc are utterly fictitious.

Stop lying Sean and stick to the facts. There is more than enough evidence for you to attack the liberals and iranians without resorting to such fables.

SEe President Bush called it what it is hostages. Hostages are not detainees like the libs want to call it . They took those people in Iraq waters. and we all agree let them go period.

Another Reagan strategy that worked: "We win, they lose." He was describing his strategy versus the USSR.

"It would have been a blood bath, with OUR BLOOD."

Oh well, you can just let this thing drag on and end up being another example of a big Western Civilization dog wimping away with its tail between its legs.

Welcome to the club.

But the British have already begun their retreat. Blair is helpless because he is almost out the door.

The Mother ship was not aware of the incident until they were in Iranian waters. Are you honestly telling me confrontation in that scenario would have been a good idea? Surely not. At least not if you wanted the guys back alive. Take a look:

Are you prepared to give these poor people an automatic death sentance for the sake of it? I'm not.

UN Issues Memo on Hostage Crisis in Iran

In response to Iran’s seizure of 15 British naval personnel in Iraqi waters, the U.N. Security Council issued a statement of “grave concern.” The UN rejected the United Kingdom’s request that the statement “deplore” Iran’s actions.

Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, explained the UN’s criteria for official statements. “‘Deplore’ would be too strong at this point,” Ban said. “If someone had been injured, then we could justifiably ‘deplore’ the action. This would, of course, be escalated to ‘gravely deplore’ if someone had been killed.”

“Now,” Ban continued, “if Iran carries out its threat to put these people on trial we would have to consider a statement of ‘admonishment.’ If, as some in Iran have demanded, any of these captives were executed, we would then be authorized to escalate to ‘grave admonishment.’ As you can see, the language of diplomacy must be properly nuanced to fit the situation. It is not an easy skill to learn. Many of us have devoted a lifetime to perfecting it.”

In related news, Tehran’s Interim Friday Prayers Leader, Ahmad Khatami, mocked Britain as “a ‘has been’ nation that must accept its humiliation by the great and powerful Iran if it hopes to avoid total destruction. They will bow before Islam or they will die. That is their only choice.”
