Gingrich decries bilingual ballots
By KASIE HUNT, Associated Press Writer 34 minutes ago
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich equated bilingual education Saturday with "the language of living in a ghetto" and mocked requirements that ballots be printed in multiple languages.
"The government should quit mandating that various documents be printed in any one of 700 languages depending on who randomly shows up" to vote, said Gingrich, who is considering seeking the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. He made the comments in a speech to the National Federation of Republican Women.
"The American people believe English should be the official language of the government. ... We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of the country and they learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto," Gingrich said to cheers from the crowd of more than 100.
"Citizenship requires passing a test on American history in English. If that's true, then we do not have to create ballots in any language except English," he said.
In the past, Gingrich has supported making English the nation's official language. He's also said all American children should learn English and that other languages should be secondary in schools.
In 1995, for example, he said bilingualism poses "long term dangers to the fabric of our nation" and that "allowing bilingualism to continue to grow is very dangerous."

They went after him after he lead the revolution in 1994 on trumped up baloney charges which I did not understand then and do not remember now. Should he run it will be their wet dream come true. They will ignore what he says, his intelligence, leadership and destroy him once again.
OTH, the past of the Beast is never questioned. Considering the fact that the old media genuflects at the whisper of her very name, her negatives are still high, a true witch which cannot be elected despite a fawning old media.
Tom Delay's book describes the corrosive nature of modern rat politics when their GOP opponents are not merely defeated, their personal lives and finances are destroyed.
See tag.
You're a genius!
There are many things wrong with printing ballots--and most other stuff --in several languages. Near the top of that list should be the cost to the taxpayer who pays to have all these ballots printed up.
'Cuz nobody'll get elected!
Wait..and this is bad, why?

1- To vote you must be a citizen.
2- To be a citizen you must demostrate some ability to use English.
3- Therefore, if you cannot read a simple ballot in English, you are most likely not a citizen.
Dang right.
If someone can't read and write English, what are the odds of their being an informed voter?
>> He lost me on "Nooclear"
I thought he was saying "Newtclear"
And like the last time he ran, he'd no doubt resign as soon as he was elected, leaving the folks who voted for him in the lurch once again.
I was one of those folks who voted for him, and I swore that @sshole would never fool me again.
If you're going to criticize Bush for his pronunciation, it's only fair that you be brought up on charges for your spelling. It's "nucular."
This is series.
exactly, basil. imagine the money that would be saved if ballots, drivers licenses and other government correspondence were printed ONLY in English. Why should my tax dollars pay because someone doesn't want to learn the language of the country they HAVE CHOSEN to live in...?
Stupid old white men... when will you learn?
Great speech by Newt
LOL, I got that.
:O)
P
LOL
I am for closing our Borders!and yes, I am critical of Bush for this, yet, I reserve my anger for Congress for not moving on this..all previous presidents did even LESS than Bush with our borders.
I just don't see any reason for Bush "bashing". Criticism yes, but "garbage collector"? that I can see on the Dem sites.
Are the Mexican Driver's Licenses also printed in English as they will be driving in the US soon?
