Are You Concerned About Mitt Romney's Faith?
LDS.org ^ | 3/31/07 | Reaganesque

There has been much controversy here at Free Republic about a Mormon running for President. Mitt Romney has been questioned about his faith and many people here have posted things here expressing concern about what they consider to be "weird" doctrines. Today and tomorrow, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is holding their 177th Semi-Annual General Conference in which the leaders of the church address the membership around the world directly.

In light of the many misconceptions regarding the LDS (Mormon) church here on FR, I offer the following links for those who have questions and concerns about Mitt and his faith. Conference is a great opportunity for those who know little about the Mormon church to have a few questions answered; to get your answers straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Therefore, here is a link to the broadcast website:

April 2007 LDS General Conference

There are audio streams available in multiple languages and video from KSL TV in Salt Lake City and KBYU, Brigham Young University's television station. The video links are in the first paragraph at the top of the page.

The next session begins at 4pm Eastern/3pm Central. Tomorrow's sessions will be at 12 noon/11 am Central and 4 pm Eastern/3 pm Central. Sessions are 2 hours long.

It is a public broadcast so no passwords or registration are required.

No!

It's better than being a FAKE-christian like Hillary!

I'll never forget seeing Hillary and Bubba strolling to church with that HUGE Bible - which meant nothing to them except a photo op!

I may not agree with the whole philosophy of Mormanism, but they have most of the basics right.

I have no problem with Romney being a Mormon. The entire issue is ridiculous, IMO.

Mormon, Martian, who cares?

I am surprised that his being a Mormon is considered negative. What year are we living in? Every religion is "weird" if you weren't raised in it.

I'm not a Mormon, nor am I planning to vote for Romney.

I have no problem with Mitt's faith or the LDS Church in general. I am an American. However, I don't trust Mitt's character and I don't think he and I have the same political values and agenda. I am glad that conservatives seem unsmitten with Mitt so that a more conservative alternative to McCainiani has a chance to get in. I am ready for Freddie.

They believe in Jesus Christ, but they don't believe in the Trinity. They believe that Jesus Christ is the brother of Satan. They believe in the need to follow ordinances as a means of attaining higher levels of Salvation. They believe that Jesus Christ only died for the sins of Adam and Eve, not for the sin that people commit today.

They believe that people can become what God is now, and that God used to be a mortal man just like the men on Earth are now. They believe that God has a father and his father has a father. The believe in many Gods. (10 Commandments speak of something to the effect: "For I am a jealous God and there are no other Gods, I know not one."

There's much more to it than that, but to me, that's enough to convince me that they are not a true Christian theology, and a dangerous Church to place one's belief.

Like most any church, there are a lot of wonderful people in the Church, but from my observations, they are not critical thinking people. And that makes sense because the LDS Church doesn't want members to be critical thinkers. Then they would want answers to questions like "How much does our leadership receive in monies from the Church?" That by the way is a strictly held secret.

Fredie is not going to run....

Is this claim an honest opinion based on some sort of analysis you can share, or are you simply being negative in underhanded service of some unstated agenda?

Well until he has a website up and some sort of announcement that he is running, then I'll take back my words until then I don't think he is running.. He is just blowing smoke and even if he does run he is trying to split up the anti McCain vote.

Romney will never win a Republican primary in Texas because of his religion.

Mormonism is NOT a Christian faith or denomination.

No.
The concern is - how conservative will he be as President, how effective and charismatic will he be, and how capable is he of defeating the Democrat nominee in 2008? It is the same question I have of every Republican candidate.
