Members of the House left Washington on Friday for their two-week spring break without weighing in on the international crisis tormenting the nation's closest ally: the capture of 15 British sailors and marines by Iran.
The omission by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif., is being noted by some Republicans, who say they should have gotten the chance to join the Senate in denouncing Tehran's bold actions.
"I am very disappointed that the speaker chose not to act," said Rep. Charles Dent (news, bio, voting record), R-Pa.
"I believe it's important for us as Americans to show our solidarity with the Britons," he added in a phone interview Friday. "The British are our closest allies, and I think we have to stand next to them in a moment like this."
The Senate on Thursday, before adjourning for its one-week break, passed a resolution condemning the act "in the strongest possible terms" and calling for the sailors "immediate, safe and unconditional release."
Pelosi's spokesman Brendan Daly said the speaker was reluctant to weigh in on the incident without knowing that such a message would do more good than harm. Daly said the British government had not asked Congress to try to pressure Tehran.
"The leadership discussed it and agreed that inserting Congress into an international crisis while ongoing would not be helpful," Daly said.
Pelosi is traveling in the Middle East, where she plans to visit Syria, Israel and the West Bank.

What a disgrace these democrats are. Shame on them all.
Nance is too busy conducting her own foreign policy in Syria to be bothered. If she could have found a way to blame Bush for it she'd have been all over it.
To any Brits here at FR, I offer my apology, just my personal solo voice that we have such inept selfish vain greedy representatives of our government that just don't care about our true allies, its not your fault you are an honest friend, it means nothing to them unless they got their kickback.
I hope it comes back to haunt people like Pelosi that they did nothing, I guess history does repeat itself like the US did before WW2.
Heres prayers your servicemen will not have to be degraded much longer, and when they return they can be part of returning favors. Sometimes I regret being an American, maybe I will move to Australia, at least they have some backbone about putting Islam in its place..
Reminder bump! :-(
These people in Washington D. C. that will go home for a spring break can shove off, when my Brothers and Sisters that are wearing America's uniforms and the fifthteen British sailors and Marines are captive. We elected them and "We the People" need to tell them to get back to D. C. and take care of the business. The Stars and Stripes seem to mean nothing to them. Call them, write a letter, or email them and tell them to get back in town an take care of America.
Miss Pelosi was worried about whether something she/dems would say might not be good or helpful, at this time? It's never stopped the Dems from immediate reaction against US troops.
Perhaps this is a wee admission by Miss Pelosi, that she hasn't a clue about defending America.
