Battles on two fronts carry risks for Bush-President confronts Dems over unpopular war,USattorneys
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 3/30/7 | Carolyn Lochhead

Posted on 03/30/2007 7:46:03 AM PDT by SmithL

President Bush went to the Capitol on Thursday to rally Republicans behind his veto threat, confident that when push comes to shove, Democrats will remove their call for a withdrawal from Iraq from a bill to fund American troops in combat.

Yet even as Bush spoke, he faced a second major front in his confrontation with Congress. The former chief of staff to embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales told an oversight committee that Gonzales, contrary to his own statements, was deeply involved in the firing of eight federal prosecutors.

As he has throughout his presidency, Bush is choosing a high-risk path. But in the seventh year of his tenure and the fifth year of an unpopular war, and facing an opposition Congress and questions about the competence of his administration, he might not prove as resilient as in the past.

He retains his sense of humor. "A year ago, my approval rating was in the 30s, my nominee for the Supreme Court had just withdrawn, and my vice president had shot someone," Bush told a journalists' banquet Wednesday night. "Ah, those were the good old days."

As ever, the stakes are biggest in Iraq, which not only defines Bush's presidency but will also define the new Democratic majority on Capitol Hill, led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the San Francisco Democrat who has made ending the war her raison d'etre.

With Senate passage Thursday of a war spending bill that contains withdrawal timetables, Bush and Pelosi are positioning themselves for a classic veto showdown.

This story beat me to it: I was thinking yesterday that the ONLY purpose of the attorney/Gonzolez stuff is to weaken Bush's support at home so that the Dems can de-fund the war.

Defund or STFU, everything else is filler and shouldnt the media already know that Bush doesnt follow polls. That strategy works with clinton and hussein obama

The Dems and their willing accomplices in the media always have to have a fake scandal to attach to the White House in order to make their arguments. Isn't it just becoming old. Don't they see that everyone knows this tactic?

Yeah, but there is a real danger that they won't pass ANY funding legislation, and try to force Bush to sign a timeline in order to fund the troops now. It won't be easy. Bush can transfer money for a while, but probably not for a year.

By this logic the european front in wwii was really a dozen fronts. One for each nation the krauts had invaded.

I would bet when the American public are asked if they want to win this war. The overwhelming response is a resounding YES. America and Americans are far from being as ignorant as the media and the demonrats want the general public to believe. Should the media and the demonrats state publicly, "That their desire is to loose this war", as their desires truly are; the American public would ride those media persons and the demonrats out of town on a rail, complete with tar and feathers. The demonrats and the media have made their bed of surrender, but I fully doubt the American public is going to go into 'the bed of surrender' with the media and the demonrats. I await and fully expect to see a rude awakening for the demonrats and media.

No, its not going to go belly up, there are enough people out here that still need it for the bottom of their bird cage.

The three ring circus concerning the attorney firings will go nowhere and will have zero effect on the surrender amendment. This author is living in a fantasy world with the absurd notion of this being a veto showdown. Comrade pelosi has absolutely zero chance of overriding the veto, and that is blatantly obvious.

This article along with the other bleating from the left that are being spewed from the coward coalition is meant simply to attempt to persuade President Bush to sign the bill. It will be interesting to see their reaction once the veto has been applied. I will predict that all the false bravado coming from the surrender monkeys will turn to hyperactive squealing that attempts to paint President Bush as out of touch with the voters desires and wishes, etc., ad nauseum.

"President confronts Dems over unpopular war,USattorneys"

I am *&^%$#!!!! sick and tired of that arrogent, brainless, elitist keyphrase.

The only "popular war" I have EVER seen is the one being waged on the West by Islamofascists. When we start wearing T-shirts and tacking up posters bearing the faces of our very favorite bloodthirsty killers, we will have gone below the level of those terrorist scum we're fighting. Lower because WE know better and will therefore have further to fall.

The president should tell the truth about why he fired those attorneys.

He didn't like their aftershave (including the woman).

He needs no other reason.

I think these reporters write the same story over and over again, just changing the current reason. How many times have they written about the "danger that such and such presents to Bush" ? Same story since he was reelected written over and over again. Journalists are not very bright and are very lazy.

Congress wants YOU to believe that they support our TROOPS...
...That must be why they are going on 'Holiday' without finishing their work on an acceptable Defense Appropriations Bill, huh?
Of course, you CAN always TELL when they're LYING.   (...Just watch to see if their LIPS are moving.)

Wow, imagine -- the attorney general, involved in firing US attorneys. Stop the freakin' presses.

Yes, the "holiday" (which are troops in the field aren't getting), and the pork in the appropriation, are the President's two best arguments (assuming he cancels his own Easter vacation plans, of course).
