President Bush went to the Capitol on Thursday to rally Republicans behind his veto threat, confident that when push comes to shove, Democrats will remove their call for a withdrawal from Iraq from a bill to fund American troops in combat.
Yet even as Bush spoke, he faced a second major front in his confrontation with Congress. The former chief of staff to embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales told an oversight committee that Gonzales, contrary to his own statements, was deeply involved in the firing of eight federal prosecutors.
As he has throughout his presidency, Bush is choosing a high-risk path. But in the seventh year of his tenure and the fifth year of an unpopular war, and facing an opposition Congress and questions about the competence of his administration, he might not prove as resilient as in the past.
He retains his sense of humor. "A year ago, my approval rating was in the 30s, my nominee for the Supreme Court had just withdrawn, and my vice president had shot someone," Bush told a journalists' banquet Wednesday night. "Ah, those were the good old days."
As ever, the stakes are biggest in Iraq, which not only defines Bush's presidency but will also define the new Democratic majority on Capitol Hill, led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the San Francisco Democrat who has made ending the war her raison d'etre.
With Senate passage Thursday of a war spending bill that contains withdrawal timetables, Bush and Pelosi are positioning themselves for a classic veto showdown.

This story beat me to it: I was thinking yesterday that the ONLY purpose of the attorney/Gonzolez stuff is to weaken Bush's support at home so that the Dems can de-fund the war.
Another yawner from the Chron. Have you heard about the Lindbergh baby Carolyn?
Defund or STFU, everything else is filler and shouldnt the media already know that Bush doesnt follow polls. That strategy works with clinton and hussein obama
The Dems and their willing accomplices in the media always have to have a fake scandal to attach to the White House in order to make their arguments. Isn't it just becoming old. Don't they see that everyone knows this tactic?
Yeah, but there is a real danger that they won't pass ANY funding legislation, and try to force Bush to sign a timeline in order to fund the troops now. It won't be easy. Bush can transfer money for a while, but probably not for a year.
By the way, how many stories in the SF Chronicle about Diane Feinstein's war profiteering?
By this logic the european front in wwii was really a dozen fronts. One for each nation the krauts had invaded.
That paper's going belly up and stories like this is the reason why. Will they ever learn?
No, its not going to go belly up, there are enough people out here that still need it for the bottom of their bird cage.
This article along with the other bleating from the left that are being spewed from the coward coalition is meant simply to attempt to persuade President Bush to sign the bill. It will be interesting to see their reaction once the veto has been applied. I will predict that all the false bravado coming from the surrender monkeys will turn to hyperactive squealing that attempts to paint President Bush as out of touch with the voters desires and wishes, etc., ad nauseum.
I am *&^%$#!!!! sick and tired of that arrogent, brainless, elitist keyphrase.
The only "popular war" I have EVER seen is the one being waged on the West by Islamofascists. When we start wearing T-shirts and tacking up posters bearing the faces of our very favorite bloodthirsty killers, we will have gone below the level of those terrorist scum we're fighting. Lower because WE know better and will therefore have further to fall.
The president should tell the truth about why he fired those attorneys.
He didn't like their aftershave (including the woman).
He needs no other reason.
San Fruitcisco can dream on. The President has something far more powerful on his side... GOD and the US Constitution!!! The media will not be allowed to sway me from the truth!

If you haven't seen this yet:
A campaign by active-duty troops asking Congress to drop plans for a withdrawal from Iraq. Lt. Jason Nichols, a 33-year-old naval projects officer who has been in Baghdad since mid-January, said the goal is to keep lawmakers focused on letting the military finish its mission in Iraq, and not prematurely declare failure

I think these reporters write the same story over and over again, just changing the current reason. How many times have they written about the "danger that such and such presents to Bush" ? Same story since he was reelected written over and over again. Journalists are not very bright and are very lazy.

(Please FReepmail if you want on, or off, this list. I certainly have no desire to increase anyones stress-level. Thanks!!!)
The former chief of staff to embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales told an oversight committee that Gonzales, contrary to his own statements, was deeply involved in the firing of eight federal prosecutors.Wow, imagine -- the attorney general, involved in firing US attorneys. Stop the freakin' presses.
Yes, the "holiday" (which are troops in the field aren't getting), and the pork in the appropriation, are the President's two best arguments (assuming he cancels his own Easter vacation plans, of course).
