I respectfully suggest that the reason(s) Thompson is currently in third is that 1--he hasn't declared yet, 2--people know his face but not his name, 3--people don't know his policies.

2 and 3 will be cleared up when he does 1.

Exactly. Yesterday, I saw the brief "head to head" polls over at RealClearPolitics, and they had both Rudy and McCain beating Shrillery. She was beating Fred 51%-37%, and I thought, "Yeah, but if they'd phrased the question different, the results would have been Hillary - 37%, That guy from Law and Order - 51%". Give Fred time. Once people start putting the name to the face, especially when he formally commits, he will NOT be in third anymore.
