She's not my enemy. She's someone with whom I disagree about a lot of things, probably.
I've debated with myself since I posted this thread whether I ought to appeal to Admin Mod to insert "political" ahead of "enemies" in the title of the thread, and I've come to the conclusion that it's better left as-is.
Why?
Because leaving it as-is has evoked from so many FReepers the very response you had: "She's not my enemy," and I believe that it's a very good thing to see this sentiment repeatedly affirmed among us.
Why?
Because, while we know what kind of people we are, those who do not know us have very different notions about us, and they, if they come here, will see this repeated testimony and have their internal presuppositions challenged; they will see post after post asserting that our political adversaries ARE NOT, in fact, real enemies, but that we esteem them as neighbors, peers, and fellow citizens with us of these great United States of America; people for whom we stand ready to give aid and comfort in their hour of need.
In contrast to others, we do not take the occasion of dire personal crisis to wag the finger or the tongue and say, "HA-HA!" We do not sink below humanity to wish evil upon those with whom we simply disagree politically. But many would not believe these assertions, unless they saw them with their own two eyes. [Some might not think them genuine even then, but that's a different issue. Psychosis is not the same as misunderstanding.]
So, I have elected to make no appeal to change the title, that it may remain to provide impetus for everyone who sees it to examine themselves and assess their personal regard for political adversaries like the Edwards'. I trust that many more among us will join with you and bear the same testimony that you do, that Elizabeth Edwards is NOT, in fact, an enemy.
