Democrats say McCain nearly abandoned GOP
The Hill ^ | March 29, 2007 | Bob Cusack

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) was close to leaving the Republican Party in 2001, weeks before then-Sen. Jim Jeffords (Vt.) famously announced his decision to become an Independent, according to former Democratic lawmakers who say they were involved in the discussions.

In interviews with The Hill this month, former Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) and ex-Rep. Tom Downey (D-N.Y.) said there were nearly two months of talks with the maverick lawmaker following an approach by John Weaver, McCain’s chief political strategist.

Democrats had contacted Jeffords and then-Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-R.I.) in the early months of 2001 about switching parties, but in McCain’s case, they said, it was McCain’s top strategist who came to them.

It's amazing to me that this forum is so willing to accept the words of known liars against the word of a man who, love him or hate him, has always tended to be a very straight shooter.

"The surprise is that we are willing to fall all over ourselves to believe what a Democrat strategist is quoted in the Hill as saying about a Republican candidate."

Because many of us remember this, and it put us through a lot of stress, like his flirting with Kerry did in 2004.

I'll get excited (actually, I won't) when I read it in a credible source.

Then why is anyone in the Republican Party serious about this man being our standard-bearer? I would almost rather see Rudy get the nomination, and that's saying something, as I see little difference between Rudy and Hillary. Also, I believe that McCain was damaged (can you say "Manchurian Candidate"?) during his long captivity in communist Vietnam.

Are they actually any Republicans who will believe this based solely upon the words of a bunch of lying, syphilitic, deranged malignant tumors known as Democrats?

Outside of you, of course.

Take this story with a pound of salt. The Democrats are looking to sink McCain's candidacy for the GOP nomination and this is absolutely the best way to do it - to paint him as a traitor to Republicans. Now, I despise McCain and think he is a traitor to the party and this story *may* be true, but it's just a little too convenient given the political circumstances.

This is news? He abandoned us in principle on so many fronts long ago, McLame-Feingold the best example thereof.

My, my. They're stabbing him in the back mighty early--this is the kind of stuff we can expect to see in the headlines (not just in The Hill) once McVain gets the nom. They want McVain to get the nom because they know where the bodies are buried, and how to quickly bury and defeat McVain.

While I may admire your strict adherence to the 11th commandment, I am willing to give my FReeper FRiends in Good Faith a pass for "falling all over themselves" in this venue.

"The Hill" is not exactly Newsweek or the Washington Post.

That being said, it should surprise no one here that an "unnamed Democratic strategist" carries about as much weight as John McCain in this forum.

While the Democrats should not be trusted because they look to weaken our Constitution in plain site, no one has been more successful at actually doing it as has John McCain.

Yes, but this is a new claim with a certain specificity that was not present before. The old denial was a general denial. You have two well-known dems making the claim that they were contacted by a named minion of McVain's. They may have kept quiet until now for intrigues of their own.

"McLame-Feingold the best example thereof"

I'll take "Gang of 14"; radicalization of the judicial selection process. But, hey,...why quibble when we're talking about undermining the Constitution.

I believe the statement from the "spokesman" was from today.

(Whether one chooses to believe this unnamed "spokesman" is another matter.)

There is still time, John. Run as a Democrat!

It's plain he won't be the republican candidate. He is dead last in every poll. I think he has screwed the republicans for the last time, and is headed for retirement
