A coaching vacancy Harvard has 41 varsity sports -- and zero blacks at the helm
Boston Globe ^ | March 28, 2007 | Bob Hohler

Harvard University, which prides itself on promoting racial diversity, is facing scrutiny for running an athletic department devoid of black leadership. Not one of the 32 head coaches guiding Harvard's intercollegiate sports programs is African-American. Nor is the athletic director or his 13 senior administrators.

The absence of black leadership was particularly striking to equal-opportunity advocates because of Harvard's distinguished stature in higher education and the school's claim that it funds "the nation's largest Division 1 athletic program."

Ivy colleges are not competitive in athletics.

. . . except for a little sport called "hockey."

Harvard should confess its sins with much weeping and wailing.

They certainly weren't competitive in hockey (except girls' field hockey) when I was coming along.

And going 3x to the NCAA and only managing to win it once in 50 years doesn't strike me as "competitive". Winning in the Ivy Hockey League, so what? They're playing against a bunch of teams with the same restrictive rules.

Harvard sends plenty of players to the NHL, and so does Cornell. I'd say that means they must have pretty good, competitive programs . . .

That's a different question. They have some very good individual players (many from upstate NY and nearby areas where hockey is a religion). A friend of mine from Buffalo was a very good college player at Cornell. I don't know if he didn't get a bid or just wasn't interested in playing pro hockey, but he went to law school instead. I guess it pays the bills.

But having a few standout stars who had good enough grades to get into an Ivy and then good enough skills to get a pro contract does not translate to having a winning team. And that's what attracts coaches who are in high demand, because that's what they're judged by. The alumni don't care if Coach Whozit sends x number of players to the pros, they want him to win games.

So we have a very large number of schools chasing a very limited number of black coaches, especially for the more esoteric or limited-interest sport. Why would a coach who can write his own ticket want to coach an Ivy team that doesn't have the recruiting ability or resources to win?

Look, black coaches are too smart to get jobs coaching losing teams. Nothing to see here.

But what does "qualified" mean with respect to Harvard athletics? Any schlub could do just fine as far as alumni are concerned. They create whole academic programs of low quality in order to diversify their faculty, but in sports -- something that they don't care much about -- they can't make a token effort?
