Giuliani Denounces Troop Withdrawal Deadline
WCBSTV ^ | March 27, 2007 | CBS/AP

Posted on 03/27/2007 7:25:09 PM PDT by FairOpinion

Republican presidential hopeful Rudolph Giuliani on Tuesday called the Democratic-controlled Congress' challenge to President Bush's policy in Iraq "a terrible mistake" and equated it with waving a white flag in the war against terrorism.

"I can't imagine in the history of war anybody announcing a timetable to run out and retreat," he said at an appearance at a delicatessen in this suburb just over the George Washington Bridge from New York City. "I think it's a terrible mistake. To put up the white flag and announce a timetable for retreat seems like a very bad strategy to me."

Giuliani's remarks came on the heels of the U.S. Senate narrowly passing a nonbinding timeline that would have U.S. combat troops home by next March. President Bush is likely to veto the resolution.

"I hope that the president vetoes it," Giuliani said. "The full focus of our energies should be on supporting the troops that are there and trying to act against terrorism, trying to create an Iraq that acts as a bulwark against terrorism instead of a headquarters for terrorism."

He also didn't mince words when asked what he would do as president if Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad continued to flirt with developing nuclear weapons.

"What I would do is make clear to him that he's not going to have nuclear weapons. That's not an option. Containment may have worked with the Soviets, but as far as I can recall, the Soviets weren't planning to come here and kill us. They didn't blow up the World Trade Center twice. We've got a different kind of enemy here. Ahmadinejad has to be clear that we're not going to let him move to the stage where he can have nuclear weapons."

Do you agree with Bush on EVERYTHING? Who did you vote for in 2004?

I didn't vote. I was still underage at the time. 2008 will be my first time.

Rudy knows what works in NYC doesn't necessarily work in Montana. This is not a scam to "grab yer guns"

Then explain his support for the nationwide assault weapons ban. He hoped to revitalize national gun control efforts.

Unless you think that it's your right to go to your local Wal-Mart and buy a bazooka, you're for gun control too.

A business declining to sell a certain product is leagues away from an elected politician trying to deprive people of their firearms.

Since it's going to be Rudy, Fred, or Mitt, are you NOT going to vote for the nominee?

Both Fred and Mitt are better than Rudy.

No offense, but you've gotta be kidding me! You know more about politics than 90% of voting age people, so good for you!

I'm not being condescending, but there's a whole lot more to political victory than "issue positions". Leadership wins.

You shall learn.

Good for you, keep your posts coming whether we disagree or not. You must have great parents!

I know. I personally think Duncan Hunter exhibits those same qualities, but without the liberal baggage of Rudy. Why do you think I've been working so hard?

My father's a fellow FReeper. Thank him for introducing me to this place.

Well that figures!

Hey, working for Duncan is fine, but when the time comes, vote GOP.

I'm sure Duncan will.

No, Rudy wouldn't split the party. You would.

Don't blame him for what you're doing.

You're still trying to show off your basic lack of political expertise?

Send me your paypal info, I'll hook you up with some cash to go buy a few clues.

We're not at the primaries, I'm pushing for the Republican Party to keep its conservative roots (the two-party system won't help if both drift towards liberalism), and I'm somehow trying to split the party apart?

[.. Ever think that maybe you are the one that's wrong about Rudy? ..]

Rudy Giuliani agrees with Hitlery Clinton on MOST ISSUES......

Being Mayor of SODOM(NYC) merely qualifies you to be Mayor of GOMORRAH(San Fransicko)..
NOT PRESIDENT of the United States..

If you don't support the Republican nominee, you're splitting the party. You say you won't support a certain nominee, so you're contributing to that climate. In other words, you're part of the problem, not part of the solution. The enemy isn't moderate Republicans. It's RATS and Islamofascists. Or maybe you're afraid of them and would rather just attack fellow Republicans?

LOL, a liberal telling me, a conservative who supports a conservative candidate, to 'get lost' on a conservative website? That, by definition, makes yu a troll!

Thanks for the positive indicator that you have lost the debate. Thanks, and good night. Time for you to go home, the big boys have won the game today.

One thing that I know Rudy would do (if he becomes President) better than President Bush and that is get right into the press corps faces and go offensive on any attack they sent his way. Part of the war on terror is fighting the press corp and Bush just cannot do it. He lacks the tough attack dog instinct...Rudy as a district attorney fighting the MOB back in the 80s not only went after, but took the MOB kingpins down with his tough, no nonsense actions.

If you don't support the Republican nominee, you're splitting the party.

Party over principle, eh? Traditionally, the Republican Party has been home to the conservative faction of the voting populace by an overwhelming margin. Republicans, traditionally, were far more conservative than Democrats. Especially when Democrats began their slide to the Left in the 70s.

What's happening now is that Left-leaning thought is slowly beginning to grip the Republican Party. You could see that with "compassionate conservatism."

You say you won't support a certain nominee, so you're contributing to that climate.

Pardon? Isn't that what the primaries are for? To push and vote for your particular Republican?

In other words, you're part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Left-leaning Republicans like Giuliani, Specter, and McCain (who's been slowly going leftward over recent years...) are turning the Party into a shell of its former self. It doesn't help that the Republicans in office won't fight back (and the conservatives that do - like Duncan Hunter - aren't given much screen time or attention by the media.) If both parties support liberals, then once the point of separating them into "Republicans" and "Democrats"?

The enemy isn't moderate Republicans. It's RATS and Islamofascists. Or maybe you're afraid of them and would rather just attack fellow Republicans?

Hardly. I just think that a conservative Republican would be a better ally to me than a moderate/liberal Republican. Giuliani is - and I'm being very light on him, considering his stances on the issues - just left-of-center. I don't care if he fights back; why should I support him if I can get another fighter who's far more conservative?

I'd have no problem having Rudy as the Press Secretary of a Hunter Administration. I'd PAY to see him deal with those circus-clowns.

Obviously you'll do what you want. But don't be whining on FReep when a Rat administration that you helped elect does something you don't like. Which they'll do every day.
