Guns do not save or secure lives (ETSU student for gun control)

It is often said that everything's bigger in Texas - and without the assistance of Academy Award worthy films such as "Debbie Does Dallas" - some may believe this saying to be nothing more than a myth. But for the Texans who don't quite measure up … there is always another way to compensate: own a gun. Because we all know how Texans love their guns, right?

However, the truth of the matter is, that Texas gun laws are no less lax than that of other states. It seems to be a love, hunger, thirst and desire for guns that has swept throughout the entire country - and with fatal results. An epidemic of intended crime prevention has proven to host a whole new genre of crime; one that's faster, easier and comes with a load of alibis. Now, now, a good American can never pass up a bargain.

Maybe that explains why 1,000 people die every day due to guns. Anti-gun control supporters will immediately attack that statement to say, and I only quote the ignorant, to not believe it, "Guns don't kill people. People kill people!" My, with such a mind set, every gun supporter should have a degree in philosophy. Maybe then they could articulate in such a way that the blame game just might work.

Sure, we can continue to blame guns for homicides, suicides, war deaths and freak accidents for as long as we like. But when other nations, such as Canada, reform gun laws only to see a 46 percent decrease in gun-related deaths, America might want to check its facts again. Not that our ego would ever allow any real admittance of having been in the wrong.

We are wrong because guns are wrong. They are deadly, unethical creations that do not save or secure any number of lives that could build a reliable statistic. Instead, there are mountains of statistics telling us otherwise.

Take, for instance, this statistic: for women, having a gun in the house increases the chances of being murdered by 172 percent. If that's not good enough, chew on this for a while: one study showed that people who attempt to use a gun in self-defense are four times as likely to die. Having a gun in the home does not make you safer. It is not an imaginary insurance policy.

I'm not sure any statistic could change the mind of someone set on owning a gun. No matter what is said in favor of gun control, it would seem that the Second Amendment has blinded us for too long. I suppose that 300 years ago, on the frontier, out in the West, and in the Appalachian Mountains, guns were necessary. Today, in 2007, with very few buffalo to eat, bears to fight or Native Americans left to slaughter … they seem a bit useless.

But never fear! Testosterone is here. He's the one behind it all, it would seem. America is fueled by the same male dominance that sees that laws regarding gun control are relaxed, if at all existent. No, there aren't any saloons full of dirty cowboys with spurs and iron belt buckles but the essence of masculinity still makes it smell like the Old West.

Of gun-related homicides, 90 percent occur amongst men. Every 30 hours in South Africa, a woman is shot to death by her partner. It's not hard to understand that if men make up the majority of gun owners, which they do, and men are far more impulsive and badly tempered than females, then deaths associated with guns is likely to be very evident. It's much easier to end an argument, unhappy life, child's crying, spousal cheating or a robbery with a simple click.

It's very rare that I insist that the government intervene in the lives of its citizens but in America, the leader of gun fatalities, something should have been done long ago. Our ambition, ego and greed have brought us this far. Undoubtedly, it will carry us to the end.

This paper will circulate for three short days. Each day, more people will die because of guns. By the time the next issue arrives, anywhere from three to four thousand more people will be dead. Not from heart attack, cancer or AIDS but from something that can be stopped but is instead ignored.

And for what reason? So that gun owners can feel more secure knowing that their families are safe, they may still enjoy the pointless sport of killing wild animals and their power is ensured.

The ultimate irony of this entire situation is that the United States currently tops the charts with $533 million made per year on gun exports, and the very people we go to war with are one in the same as those we helped arm in the first place.

Our stubborn ways will guide us in our growth. Yet, the bigger they are, the harder they fall. And when the time comes for that fall and America takes a bullet to the back of the skull, we'll wish that we had the luxury of a good old fashioned stabbing in the back. At least then we might have seen it coming.

The most common causes of death due to injury in the United States. Data is from from the National Safety Council's data on accidents year 2000

Drowning and submersion while in or falling into bath-tub 341
Fall involving bed, chair, other furniture 650
Accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed 327

The home is not a safe place.

Foreign body entering through skin or natural orifice 36
I have no idea what this means but most people in this category have been nominated most likely for a Darwin award.

Occupant of streetcar 1

Firearm discharge 230
The last category from what I read means accidental deaths with assault deaths at 10,801

So the way I see it if you really want to be safe don't bath or sleep in a bed and live on a street car.

"one study showed that people who attempt to use a gun in self-defense are four times as likely to die"

Without a gun for self defence the bad guy has a 100% chance of doing whatever he wants to do.

This Girlie Boy when he finds himself lost down in one of them east Tennessee hollows and they crank up the dueling banjos I hope he's packing some good bear grease---he's going to need it. By the time the good ole boys are through with him he is really going to wish he was able to defend himself. Its the testosterone of the criminal he should be worried about not the law abiding gun owner. What a sweet twit he is.

I personally probably wouldn't be here right now if it wasn't for my privately owned firearms.

They are just tools. Any liberal hyperventilating notwithstanding...

I just found his facebook profile. He has the audacity to be listed as belonging to a libertarian group. He's also only 18. (at 22, I feel so much older).

Every Libertarian I have met has been staunchly pro-2A. Property Rights and RKBA are cornerstones of libertarianism. You cannot BE a "libertarian" of ANY stripe and not support an individuals Rights.

More likely a confused idiotic socialist who doesn't like the stigma of the label that more accurately portrays his beliefs...

Substitute the word "car" for gun, or "knife" for gun, or "chain saw" for gun, or "swimming pool" for gun, and you could reach the same conclusion.

Odd how that works...

Maybe that explains why 1,000 people die every day due to guns.

365,000 people die each year? OK... I'm going to assume that the little urchin is claiming that 365,000 die worldwide due to firearms. But this has precisely what to do with the US and the American 2nd Amendment? Are we to believe that the American 2nd Amendment causes Muslim terrorists to slaughter Christians, Animists, and even other Muslims in Sudan? Or that Texas gun laws cause crimes in South Africa? Yes, thousands die each year at the hands of thugs around the world. These victims have one thing in common: They were all disarmed before their killers do them any harm. Whether by law or by tradition, they were all denied access to the firearms that killed them rather than defended them.

Glad the formatting got fixed. Don't sweat it, you'll get the hang of it. Sad to think that someday this jerk will be somebody's doctor, lawyer or, ahem, significant other.

There was a huge clue to this guy's mental limitations right off the bat:

...and without the assistance of Academy Award worthy films such as "Debbie Does Dallas"...

If you don't know, DDD was a porno film from about 30 years ago.

A gun has never been responsible for killing anyone unless it blew up in their face.

Improper use and the brain behind the trigger finger is what kills people.

I present to you the toughest hombre in Eastern Tennessee, who clearly doesn't need a weapon to defend himself:

Send him down to Erwin for the weekend, someone down there will give him an attitude adjustment.

Even here in Texas we have our own smelly brand of smucks like the East Tennessean's Darren Seiber who think there are no 'bad boys' in this world... 'cept those who want to own a gun for protection, sport or just to collect.

They fill the hollows and dales around Austin, Texas, vote the straight Democratic Pelosi Party Line, praise Ronnie Earl's witch hunts on Republicans for being Republicans and bleed liberal royal blue with thunderous, holier-than-thou gnashing of teeth while drinking fine wine with their pinkies crooked whenever God, Country, Right Over Wrong, Goodness Over Evil, Patriotism or the Second Amendment is spoken aloud or even thought of silently...

Our prisons are filled with these 'bad boys' who killed men, women and children without any regard to gun control laws.

Yet it is not as full as it would be for there are still good folk who pack heat and will fight back at the drop of a hat. Those 'bad boys' that crossed these good peoples' paths are in all in long, silent rows in grassy areas called cemeteries...

When the day comes when Darren Seiber runs up on one of these 'bad boys' he knows they aren't, I... I can almost wish an armed citizen will cover his rear end.

Naw, that's crap. Let Darren, the Dumb Pudknocker, get his just desert!

That'll be one less stupid peckerwood... I have to put up with...

I won't even bother with his delusions regarding gun death statistics, pulled from his butt it would appear. But this? Can't let it pass..

Not from heart attack, cancer or AIDS but from something that can be stopped but is instead ignored.

AIDS is the most preventable epidemic in modern history. This author and his fellow worshippers of political correctness have murdered more people by refusing to acknowledge the realities of AIDS and blocking any attempts to do so. Makes me ill just to hear a lib like this throw AIDS into the mix. When it comes to AIDS, liberals are murderers. in my view.
