Why does God do this to good people?

Why do you assume God did it? God gave man dominion over the earth and his body. Man can ask God for help, but God has given man free will.

zarf, God has demonstrated that he doesn't stop people from dying in horrible ways. He didn't lift a finger for Jessica Lunsford, who was actually about as Christian of a kid as you could find-- not that being a Christian should be required to be spared from dying the way she did. It's hard to say what God actually does in this life other than destroy things (flooding the earth, slaughtering Israelite enemies and their families, etc.). God does give people the Holy Spirit as a gift in this life, though, even though that's not really a tangible gift.

Job said "Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil [at the hand of God]?" God is unable to only do good. He does good sometimes, and evil sometimes (even if it's by allowing Satan to do evil-- it's all really the same thing because the buck stops with God).

He wasn't even able to stop a war from happening in heaven ("And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels..."), so you shouldn't have such high expectations for God. By the way, God didn't even see fit to give the traitor in his midst and his respective army the "death penalty" (and the US has always viewed treason as cause for death).

Also, you could say that any answering of prayer by God is in violation to total free will.

Verses like "Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you" and "If you then being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?" don't refer to tangible things, but mostly things once you're dead. God isn't a genie who grants wishes.
