I was giving them NO credit. Most Americans are couch potatoes and suck in the info they get on the boob tube as truth, without investigating it for themselves.
I am not saying it'll help Fred drastically for them to know he was a US Senator, but it'll cause them to see him in a different light once they know.
People are weird, but he will be helped by the fact that his character on TV is a tough, but cool and likable guy.
