Giuliani was getting a boost from folks who are conservative, but are willing to bite the bullet, b/c they believe that he will rain hell onto Islamofascists and that he can win the general.

With Thompson, they get someone just as tough, and who can have just as good a shot at winning. Difference is that he is also a conservative.

So this data makes sense to me.

Giuliani still leads Thompson 27-9 in the latest poll or 3 times as many people support Rudy as they do Thompson. Hardly the earth shattering support so many here said would develop. And before someone says "well he ain't even in the race yet", Gingrich isn't and usually manages in the mid teens.

Seems to me that there are a lot of GOP voters who are just looking for a 'star', and that's why they gravitated towards Giuliani in the first place. Fred is a bigger star, so they're willing to hitch their wagons to him.

He seems to be the perfect candidate. He pleases the country club Republicans, who simply want lower taxes, he pleases the social conservatives, who trust him to support their pet issues, and he pleases the "just don't let any Democrat win in 2008" voters who wouldn't back an unknown like Hunter or Brownback in the primaries.

Did I leave any category out?

"The Fred Thompson Effect"

snip:

"The latest USA Today/Gallup poll is out and it is pretty startling. Despite being undeclared, actor Fred Thompson is polling at 12%. Giuliani, meanwhile, is down 13%, partly as a side-effect of Thompson's potential candidacy, partly as a result of increased conservative awareness of Rudy's personal profile..."

Makes sense. Much of Giuliani's support arises because his supporters don't like the alternatives.

Thompson['s]... eight years in the Senate have left a more credible sense of consistency and center-right politics than Giuliani brings to the race.

After thoroughly reading up on FT, starting with his 1975 book, I was most impressed by that "credible sense of consistency."

Fred Thompson doesn't mutate and morph, you can recognize the same man today in the man who wrote that book decades ago.

Then you listen to Mitt or Rudy as they try to spit out their latest mushy equivocations, and you long for them to go away.

* If you purchase a weather radio, it will wake you up with an alarm to warn you when Fred Thompson is pissed off.

* Webster's Dictionary defines "conservatism" as "how closely one's views resemble those of Fred Thompson."

* Fred Thompson's sense of strategy is so great that he can checkmate you using only a pawn and a knight.

Lest we forget, my tag says what I'm about and I'll add my bottom line.

Anybody But McCain.

The Establishment wants McCain and maybe Thompson is designed to draw off enough conservative votes to allow McCain to win.

Who are these Republicans who support John McCain? Is it anything more than name recognition? Why is Romney trending lower? What has he down to cost himself support?

John McCain's decline in support appears to have leveled off:

That's only good news if you are polling above 50%. The bottom always provides a leveling off. I'm just amazed that 22% of GOP voters would back the media queen.

People exactly like me. I want a CONSERVATIVE, but am not so foolish as to think someone like Duncan Hunter or Sam Brownback have a hope in hell of beating Hillary, and defeating her is #1.

The more conservative the candidate, the better---in this case, Fred is terrific. But only because he's both ELECTABLE and CONSERVATIVE. If he doesn't run, I'll reluctantly support Rudy.

Fred's great advantage is his appearance on a TV series, which gives him that recognizable face that is absolutely critical for the 20% of people who don't even pay attention until the day before the election.
