Jindal joins criticism against attorney general

But Landrieu, Vitter still waiting:

WASHINGTON -- Louisiana's two senators said Monday that they need more information before taking a stand on whether U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales should keep his job, while Rep. Bobby Jindal, R-La., criticized the nation's top law enforcement officer for not being "more open and honest."

Jindal said he finds "it especially troubling that some of the statements by the attorney general seem to contradict released documents" regarding the controversial firings of several U.S. attorneys.

Vitter said the "shifting messages out of the administration," about whether all the prosecutors were replaced because of performance issues or whether some were dismissed to satisfy political interests, "haven't been helpful." Vitter said the "politics surrounding" the controversy "have obscured the fact that all U.S. attorneys serve at the pleasure of the president."

Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., said the allegations "of the politicization of the U.S. attorneys offices are serious and merit investigation."

An attorney for Monica Goodling, now on a leave of absence as Gonzales' senior counsel and Justice Department liaison to the White House, said she would invoke her Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination rather than answer questions from the Senate Judiciary Committee. She had been expected to be asked by the committee about whether she misled Paul McNulty, the No. 2 official at the Justice Department, before he testified last month that only one of the eight firings had anything to do with politics.

McNulty has been overseeing the now two-year corruption probe of Rep. William Jefferson, D-New Orleans.

Jefferson, who has not been charged and denies wrongdoing, declined to comment Monday on the attorney general or McNulty's status, given that the Justice Department investigation of him is ongoing.

How much more damage can this administration do to the GOP? Any Republican that does not know that the press 9is out to get them, would have to be pretty dense. Why hand them the knife? The press is, of course, the main culprit in this brouhaha.

While I agree Gonzales is a worthless Attorney General and should never have been appointed ,their reasons for firing him are BS.

He had every right to fire the 8 people he fired.

He should have stood up and said to Congress, "Yeah, I fired them... and you have pi$$ed me off so badly that I am going to fire 10 a day until you apologize to me and the President!

The Democrats have given us all a good lesson in hypocrisy.

It is amazing the hypocrisy of Clinton firing 93 and they dont say a word. Their so-called ethical House is also one of the most unethical in history.

I wish Gopnzales would grow some balls and charge Jefferson with a crime or give him back the $90,000 he found in his freezer.
