On this topic, I will never understand why healthy people avoid donating blood. I know and respect religious objections but for the rest of us, a few minutes of very minor and transitory discomfort is a really good trade to save lives. A simple check off on my drivers' license and I am an organ donor but it is also necessary to let your family know you've made this election.
Sermon over now.
I think you are going a little far out on a limb with both those statements.
While I applaud your sense of duty to your fellow man, I would consider it wise to temper it with a sense of duty to your fellow men.
Consider this, the fellow you don't know, may be the social equivalent of Joe Stalin, Mao, Fidel, Arafat, Ahmadinejad, ect. One who's lifespan is measured in the deaths and misery of countless innocent humans. You could save more lives by denying your organs.
As for the sister as a sociopath, based on what?, that she might have more knowledge of her brother than you? A little harsh considering what defines a sociopath.

I gave over three gallons (one pint at a time!) before the Red Cross decided that people who had lived in Europe and eaten the beef were not wanted as donors.

I'd love to donate. they bring the bus to my work every month.
however, Red Cross won't let me donate blood without giving them my social security number, which I refuse to do.
how crazy / short sighted are they ?
I am an organ donor though ( although not soon I hope ! ;-)
I use to be a plasma donor. I am no longer an eligible donor since I have diabetes and hypothyroid.
I would have gladly donated to a complete stranger if I were eligible.
