The $20 million he budgeted to hire 30 more full-time workers to comply with the federal law won't be enough money, Fernan said this week. Twenty million for 30 new workers??? What are they paying these people?

This Real ID requirement is going to be a nightmare for each state in both compliance and the legal drivers having to renew their license regardless of time left on their current license.... In Texas there will be 20 million licensed drivers having to stand in line during the next few months when process begines as opposed to the normal renewal which is once every 6 yrs..... On the other hand I guess it may remove a large number of illegally issued drivers licenses....
And in other funding needs,DPS has notified legislators that if they choose to comply with the federally mandated Real ID Act,it will come at a high price $268,761,712 for this biennium. The act will affect all 20 million exist- ing driver license and identification card holders starting with a re-enroll- ment process in which all card-holders will be required to renew or duplicate their license or ID card in-person at a DL office. The Department has told legislators that we will need 149 new commissioned and 588 new noncom- missioned full-time employees,as well as funding for additional equipment and facilities to implement the changes.
