Riot police wielding truncheons broke up an opposition rally in a central Russian city on Saturday, beating and detaining dozens of activists.

It was the second major anti-government protest by liberal and leftist forces this year to be broken up by police as the country prepares for December parliamentary elections and next year's presidential vote.

President Vladimir Putin, who is constitutionally barred from running for a third consecutive term, has given strong hints he would pick a favoured successor. Opposition groups have accused the Kremlin of further consolidating control over the country's political life ahead of elections to make sure its opponents stand no chance of winning.

In other news: the second apple has fallen on the head of Sir Isaac Newton. 'This confirms the law of gravity', said the prominent scientist. It is the Way of apples to fall. And it is the Way of such demonstrations to be beaten there, sort of knee-jerk reflex- equally predictable. When they are NOT beaten - now, that would be a news.

I recognize this photo from a different protest. Why did this man take a baby to a protest or did they just happen to be in the vicinity when the protest was taking place?

Any answer would be speculation on my part, though I think it probably has something to do with a misplaced belief in the following article of the Russian Constitution:

Section 1, Chapter 2, Article 31.

Citizens of the Russian Federation shall have the right to gather peacefully, without weapons, and to hold meetings, rallies, demonstrations, marches and pickets.

As for limonov - could not care less about him and his. brownish red, or reddish brown, sh*tty blood, or bloody sh*t - I do not see any use , or difference. As for Kasparov - he is a highly respected human being, which is more than I could say about any putinoid, on or outside of FR. And BTW, as for Soros' activities in Central and Eastern Europe - I fund them, in general, highly positive - precisely because they are anti-putinoid.

The baby looks dangerously democratic to me. I wonde rif he was beaten?

Seriously, Russia is more free now than it was under Communism, but really it is still disfunctional.

Dysfunctional for the average Russian citizen, sure - but running like a well oiled machine for those in power.

I seriously doubt anything bad happened to the kid or the adult with him/her, whereas if it was in Belarus, then I'd be worried.
