The state would STILL like to get convictions, rather than face the fallout from dismissal.
It's sad, but apparently in NC innocence may not be enough to get the charges dropped. ("Some cases are so important that innocence cannot be allowed to be a defense.")

Well - the State of NC, the State BAR, Duke University, the lunatic feminists and morons on the faculty who signed the hate screed against the students, the city of Durham and every black racist who raced to Durham to "demand justice" had better pray that irate (rich) mother of a student doesn't single their asses out for CIVIL charges and end up owning their sorry asses...
I just LOVED the way that mother made her statement on live television... Words to the effect: "Mr. Nifong will regret for the rest of his life ---- wrongly pursueing my son"...
I'm in her corner....
Plus - that dumbass President of Duke already had a history of being a worthless dumbass bastard..
Duke parents really got screwed sending the fruit of their loins to this school -- which is obviously overloaded with the scum of the earth on its faculty and administration...
