Doubts Arise on Immigration Bill's Chances
The New York Times ^ | March 23, 2007 | Rachel L. Swarns

Three months into the new Congress, immigration legislation is hitting some unexpected roadblocks. A mix of presidential politics and unforeseen fissures between Democrats and their Republican allies has stalled movement in the Senate.

Key lawmakers in both chambers seem to be moving to the right to assuage conservatives who helped derail immigration legislation last year. Now there are doubts as to whether Congress will actually send an immigration bill to President Bush this year.

Only a few months ago, Democrats and Republicans alike were predicting that immigration legislation would move relatively smoothly — with bipartisan support — through the new Democratic-controlled Congress. Lawmakers and advocates for immigrants remain hopeful that that can still happen, but they said the political environment had changed.

The Flake-Gutierrez Immigration (amnesty) Bill (HR 1645)( http://flake.house.gov/UploadedFiles/STRIVE%20Act.pdf ) is not a sure thing yet. It looks Kennedy is backing off of his bill with McCain jumping ship, and wants to use the Flake bill as their new focus.

But they are worried, and they need Republican votes to make it happen. We have to start piling on the spineless Republicans to make sure they don't give into this bill which is worse than last years Senate amnesty bill.

Let them feel the heat!

"...an emerging dynamic in the Republican presidential race.." The Boston Globe and McCain wake up and smell the coffee. This "dynanic" emerged long ago. That McCain is rethinking his open border BS is good news. People like McCain are beginning to realize that their actions have consequences.

Why are the elites so obsessed with granting citizenship to the illegal aliens?

Don't overlook the democrats either. We've actually squeezed a few good votes out of Debbie Stabenow on immigration. She may be a stupid cow but she's smart enough to know that she wants to stay in office.

"Why are the elites so obsessed with granting citizenship to the illegal aliens?"

Republicans who vote for amnesty of illegals are the suicide bombers of the GOP. They will not only blow themselves up, but take the party with them as millions of illegals sign up to vote Democrat for the next five generations. Think it can't happen? Blacks have been voting 95% Democrat since 1962. when LBJ paid them off with Great Society handouts. That's real gratitude for you.

What? no shiny new immigration reform law for government and business to ignore?

They gotta make do ignoring the old reform law? What's an anointed one to do?

Cheap labor and a guaranteed democrat majority for the remaining history of the Republic.

They aren't the only ones obsessed. It's all about ruining America and promoting globalization. Too bad they want everyone to be the same. It's like the people are one giant experiment created to appease the giagantic egos of those little minds who dare to be gods. Oh, I sound so 1984.

Al Gore isn't in there to promote his obvious lie of global warming. He's in there to change the world for his own personal agenda. What greed.

This bad idea has a way of rising from the dead over and over. I'd even go so far as to suspect that this story is a plant to make us complacent. Keep on your legislators regardless of whatever bilge the mainstream media puts out.

I think the whole idea is to stalemate real immigration reform to perpetuate the status quo: a virtually unlimited supply of illegal workers who will work cheap. Entire industries now rely on illegal labor. Their business models don't work if the illegals become citizens and can escalate their demands.

Yep, looks like they might have to continue to not enforce the current law, instead of getting to not enforce a new one. The way Homeland Security is set up, it would take them until the year 2075 to process the paperwork granting citizenship to the 20 million illegals who are here now.

Must be that some private polls indicate that more and more people are putting country first. This has to be confusing to certain politicians that march to the "international diversity" drumbeat, who see the "broad picture" that the rest of us don't. (sarc)

Republicans want cheap labor, Democrats want votes, and the elites want cheap servants.

All across America local citizens and governments are seeing precious resources squandered on federal mandates, notably, illegal alien health care, education and criminal justice. It is time for less talk and more activism and demanding our spineless federal leaders represent AMERICANS.

I know several DUmmies and they are as upset about illegal immigration and the desire of our leaders for amnesty as most of us are. I am sure that the democrats in congress have been and will be hearing from their people just as the republicans have. I asked one last year why they don't become vocal and his response was, "why, the republicans are willing to let it hang out to stop it." Now he has figured it is time for them to "let it hang out" to stop this insane bill.

The Sunday Suntimes has a great story on illegal immigrants LIVING at a CROOK County facility and a Crook County employee making comments about it. But I can't find it on the Suntimes website yet. ChicagoLady, maybe you can find it. It is of great interest to you. Then there's the new 2.5 billion dollar Illinois Healthcare plan to cover all illegals. I'm left with this:

Plan bans schools' immigration question State board expected to adopt rule today March 22, 2007
BY KATE N. GROSSMAN Education Reporter
It's a no-no for public schools to deny enrollment based on a student's immigration status, or to ask if they're here illegally, state officials say, but apparently some schools didn't get the memo. <[> Each year, advocates and the state Board of Education field dozens of complaints from aggrieved parents. Most famously, in 2006, the Elmwood Park school district nearly lost state funding after it barred enrollment by students visiting the United States on tourist visas. The school district ultimately backed down.

A 'chilling effect'
Today, the state board is expected to take up a rule that could settle this issue once and for all. "Schools shouldn't be asking for anything that would have a 'chilling effect' on enrollment of immigrant pupils, anything that would create a strong possibility they won't enroll out of fear," said Darren Reisberg, general counsel for the state board.

The proposed rule forbids schools from asking about a student's immigration status.

And when verifying a student's address, schools can't ask for information an undocumented immigrant might not have, such as a Social Security number.

(Excuse me. Under current privacy rules, it is illegal to aks ANY student what his social security number is ... unless the student is also working for the school.)
