That was when the Royal Navy didn't have to wait for political gesturing. My dad served in Beirut and the Falklands, always ready for attack. Sadly, I wonder whether the government are.

One of the drawbacks of global communications, I guess. I'd bet dollars to donuts the commander on the scene would have charged right in on his own authority given his druthers.
