UFOs flew over Phoenix in '97, Symington says By Tom Beal ARIZONA DAILY STAR
"The universe is a big place, and we're conceited to think we're alone." Fife Symington, former Ariz. governor Former Gov. Fife Symington says now that those strange lights that appeared over Phoenix a decade ago were from another world and that he had a close encounter with an alien craft on March 13, 1997.
"I'm a pilot and I know just about every machine that flies. It was bigger than anything that I've ever seen. It remains a great mystery. Other people saw it, responsible people," Symington said Thursday. "I don't know why people would ridicule it."
Symington, who was in his second term as governor of Arizona during the Phoenix Lights incident, recently told a UFO investigator making a documentary that he had kept quiet about his personal close encounter because he didn't want to panic the populace. He repeated his story Thursday on CNN, saying the craft he saw was "enormous. It just felt other-worldly. In your gut, you could just tell it was other-worldly."

i'm a native tempean, didn't see the lights, but, the goldwater range is south of the mountains along interstate 8 i believe, those flares, unless really high up, would not be able to be seen that far away 50+ miles, due to south mountain and the estrella range
There are lots of facts, some not so well known, that the naysayers either have no clue about or a mind insufficiently open to treat facts as facts.
All such will be moot a lot sooner than I'd prefer. But until then, we have to put up with ignorance gone to seed pretending to be erudite and informed; logical and above us kooks.
Should be interesting to see a lot of 'know-it-all' jaws hitting the floor.
Actually, they would. The flare drops are from a really high elevation, and the elevation of South Mountain (approx 2500 feet) would not be that high on the horizon, but high enough to occult the flares as they fell behind the line of sight.
I've driven past the Goldwater Range when they did a flare drop, those flares are high and bright, we saw them coming up from Rocky Point for at least 50 miles.
Funny, UFO researchers said in the 70's that disclosure was very soon, then they said that in the 80's, they were sure of that in the 90's and are again sure of it.
All the while, they have plenty of books and seminars for you do discover more, just show them the $$$.
And yet, no new info, just more hucksterism.
i agree with that,if you were sufficiently far enough away from south mountain and the estrella range, but for the people that saw these "flares" right above them and were close enough to the north sides of the mountain ranges, unless those flares were dropped at cruising altitude and exceptionally bright, (the lights i see off of planes which i deem to be close to casa grande,i live in s. chandler), are not exceptionally bright. plane lights that i believe are 50 miles away and at cruising altitude, these are really faint...

Well, I've been running telescopes in E. Phoenix since 1978 and I am amazed at how bad the skies are here.
Anyone can see two or more planes and remark how they can't see stars. Well the light pollution is such, you couldn't see the stars anyway.

Remember, an airliner is not gonna have its landing lights on at any point south of you. Sky Harbor is perpendicular to a viewing point in Chandler. The jet path from flights coming N. into Phoenix (from Tucson, Cabo, Hermisillo, Guaymas, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco and ZIH (only a few a week) goes up to just S. of Chandler and turns at a right angle W or E to come in for landing. The landing lights aren't turned on usually until that turn, and with the exeption of TUS flights, they all come into PHX before, or just after sundown.
I have seen the flares up close, close enough to see the parachutes they are on, they are bright, bright enough to illuminate the ground beneath them, they can easily be seen from many miles away.

I don't know about Phoenix, but as you know, in most large terminal areas, aircraft have their landing lights on as much as 40 miles out.
I do have one funny UFO story...My last US residence was in a small country town, 50 miles east of Memphis.
One local resident was convinced that UFOs were close to town and he had been observing them for the last 5 nights.
They were taking off every night, just after dark, from a grove of trees at the end of a large field.
The local town cop and myself went out to observe this strange phenomena.
Sure enough, as soon as it was dark, the orbs came rising out of the far away trees.
Well, I laughed as I knew they were the landing lights of departing aircraft from MEM International, 50 miles away.
Well, coming N to Phoenix, even with landing lights the green and red wing lights would be lit.
Those never were reported.
