Righters' Club
Free Republic discussion ^

Squarebarb:

There were some of us including GOPpoet who were thinking of starting a writer's thread here on FR. There's a horse thread, a football thread, a Hobbit Hole thread, so why not a thread for us writers?

And mainly sticking to fiction otherwise the discussion tends toward politicsa iinstead of the craft of writing.

Okay Eleutheria5, YOU start the thread."

Eleutheria5:

On it. Could use some help from someone who knows how to do HTTP and other techy stuff, though. Tried to learn, but drat that right hemisphere dominance we creative folks have. I've actually been running a board on the aol writers' club since 1996 called Conservative Writers' Club. Mostly it simply fights flame wars with liberal writers, though, and all the conservative contributors, including me, burn out. It'd be great to get away from that and just swap ideas with people who DON'T wish every one of us a flaming death.

Let this serve as an inaugural post on a new thread dedicated to the proposition that literature and the arts are being raped and bludgeoned to death by collectivists who are opposed to all true creativity. It is time the true creative community took matters into their own hands, and swapped ideas and resources at a regular forum. This is as good a place as any to start.

Hi. I'm a tech writer by trade and a playwright (of sorts) and screenwriter by avocation. Could I get on your ping list, please?

I had an idea for writers, a game actually. We take the original 'Common Sense' by Thomas Paine and rewrite it sequentially, paragraph by paragraph, to incorporate common sense into today's debates.

I write mostly fantasy, with a Christian bent. I have often wondered if there was any place on FreeRepublic for writers to congregate. Thank you for this thread!

Righters' or Writers' Club? Apparently, you "creative folks" spell creatively, too.

They call me a writer and that's up for debate, though it is true that I'm righter than most.

See how that works?

It's not my thread. I just picked it off Eleutheria's sleeve.

Did Eleutheria start a similar thread, or is this the only one (on this subject)?

Let's start by correctly spelling "writer!"

Put me on this list.

I'm an amateur scifi writer with a severe case of writer's block, but some good ideas. I need all the help I can get if I'm going ever get any of it finished, much less published.

Tech writer huh?

I have deep, dark, doubts about anyone in that profession. They are all closet horror writers.

After 30 years in the trade, I should know.

Every get the urge to insert some funky text in a tech book?

I got in trouble once, in the troubleshooting section of the manual, I inserted the question:

"Do you have any loose screws?"

No one caught it and it went out the door like that. Feedback was awsome. I, however, had to hussle and find a new contract.

Well! It was so easy! I am putting this on favorites. And in case anybody knows how to set up a sort of header, or title page (as they have on the horse thread), here's an image for us.

Word of advice about "writer's block". Ignore it and write. Let it come out lame. Let it suck to high heaven. You can always rewrite bad work, but you can't rewrite nothing. That should be the least of our worries.

And so who will keep the ping list? Or should we just drop in every day?

Second thought or thoughts;

1.)Let's keep the discussion on fiction. If we get into non-fiction writing, people get all wrapped up in political discussions. I have seen it happen on so many 'book' threads.

Besides, the craft of fiction is particular in its problems, such as creating chracters, plots, etc. and we could all help one another with that.

2.) Perhaps, like the 'word for the day' thread, we could propose a single line, and everyone is invited to take off on it. Such as:

He was driving past an abandoned factory when he saw a single red high heeled shoe drop from a broken window...'

Or whatever.

Would appreciate feedback on the above.

Gee I hope this thread gets going.

Eleutheria5 is right in that literature is being subjected to publisher's pressures for political correctness, and it is going to get worse in the election year of '08.

And also that you can hardly have a decent discussion with liberals howling and flaming.

I'll give it a try then.

I'll help administer this Righters ping list if you need help with it. I think it's a great idea. I know I always do better if I have people to bounce ideas off of or simply tell about what problems I'm having.
