Statement by Angela Anderson, Vice President for Climate Programs,

on the release of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology report, "The Future of Coal in a Carbon Constrained World."

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology released a report entitled "The Future of Coal in a Carbon Constrained World" which found coal can play a role in a carbon constrained world if we develop the technologies to capture greenhouse gas emissions.

"The MIT study provides valuable information for Congress as it considers how to construct a federal climate policy. The study is the first to make absolutely clear that climate policies and coal use need not be mutually exclusive, and outlines a clear path forward to develop the knowledge base and regulations necessary to ensure what we need to manage the emissions from future coal use."

"The study also looked at China and India, two other coal-dependent economies. There is no chance of getting emerging economies to agree to carbon limits until the United States has a carbon policy of its own. It also found that delayed carbon controls by emerging economies are manageable and may in fact provide an opportunity for the U.S. to export carbon capture technologies. But only if we get busy testing and developing them now. One can only hope our leaders will stop using China and India's inaction on carbon restrictions as an excuse to avoid putting our own house in order.

"John Deutch's statement that the overall economic costs of a carbon regime are quite small if done right is welcome news. The technology is available for us to use coal and minimize its carbon footprint. The next step is to conduct full scale carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) tests to develop the knowledge and regulations to ensure that it can be done safely and reliably."

"This study on the Future of Coal makes it clear that we have the technology to reduce coal's carbon footprint. Now we need a national cap and trade system to make carbon sequestration technology commercially viable and an essential part of our global warming policy"

Aren't we to the point where it is obvious that our "carbon footprint" doesn't matter? Sheesh.

"There is no chance of getting emerging economies to agree to carbon limits until the United States has a carbon policy of its own."

This is ridiculous claim. Our polution control efforts dwarf what China and India are doing, yet those countries are doing nothing to match what we have already done. And they still get a free ride from mental wonders who write this report.

One can only hope our leaders will stop using China and India's inaction on carbon restrictions as an excuse to avoid putting our own house in order.

One can only hope they will continue, unless of course they are willing to ban imports from those countries until those countries have taken whatever 'anti-carbon' steps that we have.

When did we reach the idea of a "Carbon Restrained World"? How about a BS restrained world with Gore in the lead position. This is just a money making tactic and the know nothings will follow like rats. Maybe he should go back to congress and request a missle, for his own personal use, to take him to the Sun. That way he can see for himself that it is the Sun that is causing problems. Maybe he can correct this like he did with the Internet.

it is the Sun that is causing problems.

Our very own variable star. Actually it is not causing problems but making it possible to live on earth. Maybe that is a problem for some elites: that it is possible for life other than elites on earth.

We ran out of coal in the 1950's or early 60's. It was promised to us after WWII. Remember? We've had a lot of experience with "bullshitters anonymous". Scratch yer ass and get outa here, algore!

They want to claim this issue, while Bush is light years ahead of them on it. I loved it when Joe Barton ticked off all tehe measures that have already addressed algore's recommendations. They have permitted the first coal fired utility with carbon sequestration and it is already being built. Under the Pacific initiative we will be selling up to date clean technology to China and India.

We are a coal SUPERPOWER!
We have lost of clean western cola to burn for electricity and to process into diesel, kerosene, jet fuel and heavier fractions. This is where GW Bush as a Texas oilman fails. We need to move to coal and diesel for automobiles.

And forget Al Gore, global warming is a non issue

Someone with more expertise please help me.

Is there a natural way to create more elements?

Could we make more carbon, are we making more carbon, or are we only recycling the carbon that used to be in the atmosphere, was sequestered in the oil, and now released back into the atmosphere through the internal combustion engine???

I know plants can make more water, but water is a compound. What about elements??

P. S. I think I was looking at the boys the day they explained that.
