I took a tour of Tikal in Guatemala several years ago. Our guide Ruben, a local who had lived in the area for his entire life, was very candid about the ritual sacrifices performed by the Mayans. And even how it was considered in the culture an honor to be selected for sacrifice!

And even how it was considered in the culture an honor to be selected for sacrifice! Yep, elimate the best and the brightest from your gene pool, and then spend a thousand years wondering why the Conquistadores came in and took everything not nailed down.
