'Freedom Is About Authority': Excerpts From Giuliani Speech on Crime
New York Times ^ | March 22, 2007

Posted on 03/22/2007 11:28:22 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

...We constantly present the false impression that government can solve problems that government in America was designed not to solve. Families are significantly less important in the development of children today than they were 30 or 40 years ago. Religion has less influence than it did 30 or 40 years ago. Communities don't mean what they meant 30 or 40 years ago.

As Americans, we're not sure we share values. We're sometimes even afraid to use the word values. We talk about teaching ethics in schools -- people say, "What ethics? Whose ethics? Maybe we can't." And they confuse that with teaching of religion. And we are afraid to reaffirm the basics upon which a lawful and a decent society are based. We're almost embarrassed by it.

.... What we don't see is that freedom is not a concept in which people can do anything they want, be anything they can be. Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do.

... The fact is that we're fooling people if we suggest to them the solutions to these very, very deep-seated problems are going to be found in government.

... They are going to have to be just as solid and just as strong in teaching every single youngster their responsibility for citizenship. We're going to find the answer when schools once again train citizens. Schools exist in America and have always existed to train responsible citizens of the United States of America.

If they don't do that, it's very hard to hold us together as a country, because it's shared values that hold us together.

What cheerleaders? I merely want someone proficient at English to explain to me what you wrote in that specific sentence.

Look, I'm sorry you are having a rough day. generally, when I am having a bad day like you obviously are, i don't post at FR. You may want to do the same. Just friendly advice, mind you!

Have a nice day!

"Something is really beginning to worry them. "

I think it's the buzz surrounding fred thompson that is taking away from the rudy express. And fred hasn't even declared eyt.

Who were the two that were banned?

If you're going to post all these pro-rudy stories in an effort to drum up support for him, you need to be prepared to have those things called into question.

Dear Flash. I post the threads to get debate, something that has totally escaped you. With your hate and badgering, debate and comment is impossible. Is that your objective? Do you have no other purpose on this site than to be a cheerleader for discourse?

From the actual transcript -

"-Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do.

[ Interruption by someone in the audience. ]

You have free speech so I can be heard.

[ Another interruption. ] -"

Apparently, someone in the audience saw the same danger in his words!

Freedom can't be about authority, because authority always ends up taking our freedoms.

One was 'beansox'

Lied about so many things she couldn't keep it all straight.

She denied supporting Rudy, but had a link to her myspace page, which had, among other disturbing items, a link to a Rudy campaign site.

I'd have to go back and look for the other. I've fogotten the screen name, but he admitted to being banned twice before!

I took your question to be rhetorical as is plainly evident in how it was phrased and structured. You made obscure references with false choices. Maybe that style works with others, but I 'aint buying.

On a different note, I am disturbed by the general tenor of this thread. It has devolved into ad hominem attacks that are unnecessary and counterproductive. My suspicion is that there may be DU trolls/teen aged twits out there. However, I also think that there are more than a few cantankerous egotists who would rather cause trouble than engage in constructive conversation.

I am not a Rudy supporter at this point in time. I would like to see what Fred Thompson and Sam Brownback have to offer. I am not fond of McCain, Romney and some of the obscure folks like Duncan Hunter, as wonderful a conservative as he may be. However, as I have stated on numerous threads I will vote for any of these people if nomonated by the Republican party.

If anyone thinks that a Hillary or Obama Osama win will be a moral victory for "true" conservatism, they are either dangerously delusional or actually rooting for the other side.

I post the threads to get debate,...

If debate is your intent, why the snide personal attacks?

With your hate and badgering, debate and comment is impossible.

Oh, really? Then why not stop posting? If all you have to say is insults, you've failed at your goal "to get debate".

No I was being dead serious, Nothing rhetorical at all.

If you lose your freedoms and liberties, does it really matter if there is an R a D or an I in front of the name of the dictator the takes them from you?

They may as well just cut to the chase and put either a "C" or an "N" next to their names.

Dictators hate and despise Liberty. They couch their stance and policies in feel good politics that caters to those who have not studied history and do not see their despicable acts for what they are. Fascism and Communism.

"With your hate and badgering, debate and comment is impossible. Is that your objective? Do you have no other purpose on this site than to be a cheerleader for discourse?"

My hate? For what? Liberals? Ok, I guess I hate them because they are enemies of one of the greatest gifts the Creator gave us - individual human freedom. So I have a great deal of disdain for those who would strip people of that gift.

"debate and comment is impossible."

Debate may be impossible for you, but not for me. I concentrate on two things:

1. The issues: The meat of the matter. Records, statements, meaning, context of those things with the greater record and the principles behind the founding of this country.

2. Debating tactics and technique: If someone is avoiding real debate on the issues by adopting liberal tactics like changing the subject, incorrectly attributing quotes or actions to a poster (see your claim that I was holding out for a "pure" candidate), I most certainly will point that out. I find it unacceptable and detrimental. I will also go after double standards - accepting statements and actions a politician of one party when they wouldn't accept those same actions from a politican in another party.

I'm not sure why you're getting so upset at me and the other posters merely because we don't accept explanations and claims from a guy with an (R) by his name at face value.

You see, I don't believe in personality or party over principle. Principle is the most important thing, which is why I will go after someone with a (R) by their name if they're behaving like a liberal. It's why I will draw attention to a poster who has adopted the tactics of the left to make excuses for a liberal republican.

Party and personality are merely vehicles for the advancement of principles. It's not the other way around. I believe you have to go for your principles first and then find the personality and the party that will best advance those principles. The worst thing I could ever do is settle on a personality in the name of political expediency (HE CAN BEAT HILLARY) when that personality goes against most of the principles I believe in.

"Do you have no other purpose on this site than to be a cheerleader for discourse?""

dis·course n.

1. Verbal expression in speech or writing.
2. Verbal exchange; conversation.
3. A formal, lengthy discussion of a subject, either written or spoken.
4. Archaic. The process or power of reasoning.

Well, I guess I would be guilty of being a cheerleader for discourse, because it is vital for advancement of the conservative / limited government agenda. That's what the conservatives do - they discuss and debate principles and results in order to have a "best of breed" position. That's what built the conservative movement. So color me guilty of being a cheerleader of discourse.

But I guess my most egregious assault on the conscious of those who push liberals is my constant cheerleading for individual freedom and respecting the originalist view of the constitution that made this country great. And I'm also guilty of failing to support people with (R)'s next to their name who are hostile to those things.

Sorry if all that offends you. But from everything I've read, that is why this site is here, so this is why I'm here at this site.

I'm not trying to smear you.

That was done well enough on post # 149 by Leatherneck MT.

But perhaps you can explain to me - what debate were you attempting to engage in by posting this?

"??????????????

What planet do you orbit?

Did you have a point, or were you just trying to avoid having to respond sensibly to my comment on post # 103 about post # 22?

Your Myspace page is screwed up. It is misaligned to the right and there is no horizontal scrollbar on there. Plus, I wanted to see some pictures of you to see if you're hot, but couldn't find any.
