I listened to her doctor comment to reporters after the Edwards' finished speaking. The doctor said Mrs. Edwards now has Stage IV breast cancer. That only has a five-year survival rate of 20%. This rings close to home for me. Very sad. Mrs. Edwards is putting on a brave face, it seems. Best of luck to her.

there is no cancer that 'can be managed', she doesn't have a long time to live, and with those little ones!!! Even if she makes it 5 years, the last couple aren't going to be very pretty...I've been through it several times with relatives.

No way that she can travel while in chemo. Brutal process. Just as she will start to feel better from a treatment she gets to have the next one. Constant nausea and extreme weakness. If one has a chance of recovery it beats dying but not by much.

Blind ambition. Anyone who wants to be President that bad, doesn't deserve to be President.

His ambition is greater than is his love for his wife. There's a lot of that goin' around in the RAT Party.

No doubt he hopes to trade on the sympathy vote.

Having experienced a very close relative die of cancer, I feel that this is a very unwise decision on Edwards part. If the cancer has recurred in her rib cage, it will metastasize fast if it has not already. She will need him now more than ever. My prayers go out to her.

I realize it's their decision to do this, but with that type of cancer and the limited time she has left, it would make more sense to call it quits and devote the remaining time they have to each other.

This really seems like a cold, callous decision to me. I hope it's one the Breck Girl can live with.

Stage IV cancer of any sort is a death sentence.

I find it hard to be upset at either of the Edwards' right now.

I remember Arlen Specter, during his bout with cancer, talking about the importance of maintaining a sense of normalcy ... of having something important to do each day.

While I would absolutely take a different path, I'm not going to impugn Senator Edwards' motives at this point. If the presidential process turns into a giant Oprah show, I may reconsider.

I feel for them - no matter which decision they made, none could avoid wrenching heartache for the both of them.

Well, it's their decision.

Politics is their life.

Which is why he should never be elected president.

It is a sad thing. She's young and I, too, wish her the very best. I agree that she's a brave soul and a real trooper too.

Unbelievable! When confronted with life's greatest challenges, it's either fight or flight.

John Edwards has chosen flight. Fleeing away from his wife's side to pursue his own selfish agenda.

Who would want such a morally empty person as President of the United States?

It is times like this when you really to get to see the nature of a person, and with Edwards, it's not a pretty sight. The blinding, driving ambition for some shot at the Presidency, or more conceivably - the Vice-Presidency, overwhelms any perception of the higher priorities in life.

It would be one thing if it was readily apparent to all, that he had some higher ideals or revolutionary strategies to try in office, but he's never even thought it necessary to believably have any.

So, there he sits exposed, with his selfish egotism plain to all.

If I were the doctors treating his wife, I would DEMAND he be present for all her treatments, this 'sue happy' little twit will drag them into court at the drop of a hat.

They better check, double check and triple check every procedure and get his signature agreeing to every treatment.

My prayers for this lady. No one deserves this.

Still, I wonder how long it will be before Hillery announces that Bubba has breast cancer?
