CHAPEL HILL, N.C., March 22 _ — John Edwards, the North Carolina Democrat, said today that his wife’s cancer had returned, but that his bid for the presidency “goes on strongly.”

“The campaign goes on, the campaign goes on strongly,” he said, with his wife, Elizabeth, at his side.

Mr. Edwards said he learned earlier this week that the cancer had reappeared in his wife’s rib cage and that the couple recognized that it was no longer curable, though it could be managed with treatment.

I certainly hope not.

I do too, but if my wife was in the same situation, there is no way I could be away from her.

Whats the over/under that Bill Clinton mysteriously comes down with Nut Cancer?

It's called Testicular Cancer and its most common in men between the ages of 15-34. At his age, Bill Clinton would more likely be at risk for prostate cancer.

That said, as a seventeen-year survivor of testicular cancer I find your post in poor taste.

There's nothing funny about cancer, no matter who it strikes.

Yeah, that was kind of creepy. She looked like some low-level employee who just got fired.

Very tragic. I wish her great physical and spiritual comfort during this difficult time.

It may indeed be none of our business; but when a man has a wife with a terminal illness, and three children (two are still very small), then I would think his main concern would be for the wife and for the kids. These kids need to have attention from their parents as they are also going to be under extreme distress, IMHO. Just who is going to be the care giver for the children with the dad running around campaigning for an office which he will never get anyway. Elizabeth Edwards is not only going to be worrying about her children, but going to treatments which will debilitate her and cause weakness and fatigue.

Who's watching the kids???

In order to be disappointed in someone you have to have initially had the expectation that the person would do the right thing

Especially when in an interview a few months ago Edwards said the only thing that would make him drop out of the presidential race was if his wife got sick again.

I'm willing to bet that he would happily give up the campaign if it meant that his wife would be healed. Come on, everyone, let's have some compassion for these people.

Bargaining is not an adult way of dealing with tragedy. Edwards' priorities should be his family, but he apparently has other grandiose ideas.
This is the same man who was willing to put every obstetrician in NC out of business by presenting junk science to illiterate juries. He appears to be not interested in the public good, just what's good for himself.

Its more of a statement about what Hillary wouldn't do to get elected. I apologize if you took offense but its more about Hillary than a real person that actually had Cancer.

If he uses the situation to beg for votes it'll be a different story, but for now, I see this as something they want to do.

You can't change a leopard's spots; he's an ambulance-chasing, pandering opportunist.

Edwards has made this political theater for the 10 million dollars in free air time that it represents, this will run for at least the next three news cycles and larry king and oprah will do at least three shows on it spread out over the next few months.

Cancer is not funny, politicians using cnacer as a shill for their craven ambition is laughable in a pathetic kind of way.

Having experienced a very close relative die of cancer, I feel that this is a very unwise decision on Edwards part. If the cancer has recurred in her rib cage, it will metastasize fast if it has not already. She will need him now more than ever. My prayers go out to her.

That could be the emotional toll. It's heartbreaking to see anyone - much less a relatively young mother - suffer with this. Maybe it was a trick of the camera angle, but it looked like she was standing five feet away from her husband. It was like she was an afterthought to Edwards' insistence that the campaign would continue.

I realize it's their decision to do this, but with that type of cancer and the limited time she has left, it would make more sense to call it quits and devote the remaining time they have to each other.

This really seems like a cold, callous decision to me. I hope it's one the Breck Girl can live with.
