Edwards to Continue '08 Bid Despite Wife's Cancer
The New York Times ^ | 3/22/07 | John Broder & Christine Hauser

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., March 22 _ — John Edwards, the North Carolina Democrat, said today that his wife’s cancer had returned, but that his bid for the presidency “goes on strongly.”

“The campaign goes on, the campaign goes on strongly,” he said, with his wife, Elizabeth, at his side.

Mr. Edwards said he learned earlier this week that the cancer had reappeared in his wife’s rib cage and that the couple recognized that it was no longer curable, though it could be managed with treatment.

You need to take a breath and stop your self righteous gutter sniping....

You need to brush up on your reading comprehension skills.

>>>Unbelievable! When confronted with life's greatest challenges, it's either fight or flight. John Edwards has chosen flight. Fleeing away from his wife's side to pursue his own selfish agenda. Who would want such a morally empty person as President of the United States?

All of the Newt Gingrich supporters. Remember, he divorced his wife with cancer and continued to pursue his own selfish agenda.

Plus, Edwards ought to know that he has almost zero chance of getting the nomination.

Unless he's delusional, which I'm beginning to think he is.

He may think he'll get sympathy vote out of this, but he should spend this time with his wife and kids and if he wants to, try again in 4 years.

Where's his mind going to be as president when his wife is living her last days?

Since he obviously considers her only an adjunct to his run at the presidency, I'd say not on her.

No, I am not forgetting about Newt, who did basically the same thing. He, too, is a cad.

It may be some consolation to Elizabeth that John is not leaving her for a younger, healthier woman.

Both guys are lower than whale shit.

You asked what justifies us wallowing in the gutter....?

Did I misunderstand?

I graduated the sixth grade and I sort of can speak 'merican.

You survived Testicular cancer, great. The other poster used a term you found offensive, I commented on the use of cancer as a political prop.

Who needs to check their comprehension?

Couldn't agree with you more. As a survivor of some 34 years, I can tell you how important it is to keep hope with you at all times.

Regardless of what I might think of Jon Edwards the politician, he is the man Elizabeth is married to and what they do in their quiet world with just the two of them, I pray brings her hope and joy. She obviously loves him very much. But I hope this decision was one they made together. I suspect that it is. None of us know how they arrived at the decision.

I would suspect that when you're married to a politician, you become a political person yourself. Even if it's just a little bit. I just hope that she can pace herself and take a rest when she feels tired.

She looks enormously tired in the photo of them at the press conference.

I've not been a member of FR very long, but I am very impressed and glad I signed up just in reading the responses (with a few exceptions) to the news.

What I have come to really like about FR is the strong, grounded Christian faith that is so easily and unashamedly expressed. The compassion for the Edwards family shows much class and concern as well.

And in 2012 he might have to run against a sitting Democrat.

Barring a political miracle, I would say that is more than likely.

It is times like this when you really to get to see the nature of a person, and with Edwards, it's not a pretty sight. The blinding, driving ambition for some shot at the Presidency, or more conceivably - the Vice-Presidency, overwhelms any perception of the higher priorities in life.

It would be one thing if it was readily apparent to all, that he had some higher ideals or revolutionary strategies to try in office, but he's never even thought it necessary to believably have any.

So, there he sits exposed, with his selfish egotism plain to all.

If I were the doctors treating his wife, I would DEMAND he be present for all her treatments, this 'sue happy' little twit will drag them into court at the drop of a hat.

They better check, double check and triple check every procedure and get his signature agreeing to every treatment.

I really think its none of our business how they chose to spend this time. Some people believe that continuing with their lives is the best way to keep their minds focused on getting better.

I completely agree with you. She looked strong and said in the press conference that she feels good . As longs as she continues to feel fine and gets treatment, I see no reason to criticize their decision. She stated that if the doctor had told her not to go on the campaign trail, that Edwards would have dropped out.

I may not agree with Edwards, but I don't believe he would put his aspirations ahead of his family.

I know I'll be in the minority on this board, but I have no problem with their decision.

Maybe you just need to read more. Because there's a substantial core of FReepers who rejoice when any political enemy falls ill.

I am in no way defending the Edwards for the political exploitation of their personal tragedy.

I just don't see the reason to respond in kind (as I have seen FReepers do just within the last 24 hours).

Your mileage may vary.

Edwards is using cancer as an insulator from criticism, as a tawdry ploy for associated sympathy....

How do you know that? Has he dismissed criticism in the past based on his wife's illness? Could you provide a couple examples?

I know all about cancer. Each person has a right to deal with whatever stage of cancer they have in their own way. If these people want to run for President, so be it.

it has dawned on me that this may be what his wife wants...is for him to continue his run for presidency.

He can drop out later if need be.

Yeah....pretty much...

Also, the weakness of the political base on the repub side.

It will take several years of democrat largess and corruption to reverse the mistakes made by our representatives.

This is a natural populist reaction that was much slower and less obviously cyclical before the Internet.

Now with the MSM power to move issues, and the speed of the Internet, we have a much more exaggerated cycle.

One can only hope that a good candidate gets through the primary who can appeal to the masses and the public responds to it's fears of putting one party in total control. it is the only hope we have of retaining the WH.
