CHAPEL HILL, N.C., March 22 _ John Edwards, the North Carolina Democrat, said today that his wifes cancer had returned, but that his bid for the presidency goes on strongly.
The campaign goes on, the campaign goes on strongly, he said, with his wife, Elizabeth, at his side.
Mr. Edwards said he learned earlier this week that the cancer had reappeared in his wifes rib cage and that the couple recognized that it was no longer curable, though it could be managed with treatment.

amen. they have plenty of money to have a wonderful rest of her life and they should. spending all your energy, mental and physical, in the mean game of politics is an idiotic way of spending the rest of your loved one's life. i hope he doesn't regret it.
Edwards has clearly made his priorities known.
LOL.....I'm loving your comments today!
Politics is their life.
Which is why he should never be elected president.
You nailed it, Gumdrop.
Kids in these weird political families suffer enough without the reality that one of their part-time parents is dying.
I feel very sorry for them.
From a psychological standpoint, she may get more relief from the distractions of being very very busy.
Her choice, I hope.
Prayers for them all.
let's ask this question; So Edwards won the presidency. Where's his mind going to be as president when his wife is living her last days?
It would be interesting to hear him explain -- in light of his "two worlds" approach to this campaign -- how it is that his wife was able to get all the cancer tests done in 24 hours, when it takes the great unwashed masses weeks to even get the appointments.
You need to take a breath and stop your self righteous gutter sniping....I did not say cancer was a laughing matter.
Edwards is using cancer as an insulator from criticism, as a tawdry ploy for associated sympathy, God Bless your cancer survival but stop wearing your feelings on your sleeve.
Sadly, you're right. I am a perennial optimist, however.
They made it OUR business when they called a presser for high noon and drug us into their nightmare.
It is a sad thing. She's young and I, too, wish her the very best. I agree that she's a brave soul and a real trooper too.
She also looks like she's lost a lot of weight.
Regardless of the motivation behind Mr. Edwards plans to continue campaigning, it certainly indicates that the priority is to hopefully become president.
My heart goes out to Mrs. Edwards and their children. I have lost a parent to cancer, and will soon lose another to the same disease.
If Mrs. Edwards remains behind while receiving treatment, who will provide deeply needed support and reassurance to their children, as well as for her? The phone call can't replace loving words and a phyiscal presence. Obviously, Mr. Edwards will be away. When I consider what the family has already been through, including the loss, especially a tremendous loss for a mother, of their son, then to be followed by this tragedy, I question Mr. Edwards dedication and judgement.
I do not believe Mrs. Edwards will be getting busy dying. I believe that regardless where she's at, she make a determined effort to overcome this battle. It's just unfortunate for she and her children that they'll be going it alone. I'm sure that'll have family support, but the main man, so to speak, husband and dad, will be missing in action.
Prayers to their family.
The presidency will come and go. He'll always be a father and husband.
Amen.
"Whose looking out for the emotional well-being of the children"...?
Well, that is exactly what I was writing about. Imagine the fear in the hearts of the two youngest children who are, I believe, both under 8 years of age?? The oldest daughter is in her early/mid 20's. With a mother dying from cancer (stage IV cancer is a death sentence, let's not pretend it is not), these kids need their dad now more than ever. John & Elizabeth decided to have more children after their teenage son died. I think Elizabeth is about 55 years old, and probably endured lots of hormone shots in order to have pregnancies this late in life. This decision may have actually contributed to the cancer. I'm sure neither parent regrets this decision, but then John ought to behave like a husband and father and not like a two-bit candidate.
Unbelievable! When confronted with life's greatest challenges, it's either fight or flight.
John Edwards has chosen flight. Fleeing away from his wife's side to pursue his own selfish agenda.
Who would want such a morally empty person as President of the United States?
There are no victors over stage IV cancer. 50% mortality in 2 years. 90% mortality in 10 years. The primary goal for treatment of stage IV breast cancer is the relief of symptoms She's in for a rough time with death at the end and I feel sorry for her and anyone else in that position.
They have all the power and money they could ever want
People like Edward NEVER have all the power and money that they want. He wouldn't be running for president if this were true.
Agreed
I would venture a guess that even the dumb @sses over at DU would agree that this is a bad move, a dumb move and very callous and selfish move on Edwards' part.
He had no chance at all to begin with, but to try and campaign with this going on seals it - the very fact that he would try means he's not fit to be the President of the United States of America
