Bill Would End Mandatory Testing of Older Drivers[Washington DC]
WJLA ^ | 21 March 2007 | WJLA

D.C. Councilman Jim Graham has introduced a bill that end a D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles requirement for periodic drivers' tests for older motorists.

Graham says he's gotten a lot of complaints about the written and road tests now required of drivers after age 75. The special tests are required every five years when older drivers try to renew their licenses.

Graham says he's not sure the tests serve a useful purpose. Some elderly drivers have complained about needing to memorize driving rules from DMV manuals in the weeks before they show up for retesting.

The District also requires drivers over 70 to take vision and medical tests.

The D.C. regulations are considered among the most stringent in the nation. Illinois and New Hampshire also require elderly drivers to take road tests.

I wonder how many DC drivers have NO automobile insurance? Once upon a time, I think that number ranged around 50%.

Gee, quel surprise!

And these morons(DC politicans)want a real vote in the Congress? THAT'S really funny.

1. Left turn signal needs to by on:

a) At all times
b) As soon as you leave the driveway
c) During daylight hours
d) While driving in the state of Florida
e) All of the above.

I don't understand why it is a bad idea to make sure someone's hearing, eyesight and mental acuity have not degraded to where they should not be driving - as much for their good as anyone else's.
Driving is a privilege, not a right. There are people who just shouldn't be behind the wheel of a car, for many reasons; sometimes one of those reasons is the effect of losing perceptive abilities. As one who rides a motorcycle a bit I really think there are some folks who just shouldn't be behind the wheel of a car any longer. Just my .02.

More evidence, if any be needed, that D.C. has some brain-dead Councilmen. Every week there is a story about a coot -- an elderly driver of whatever sex -- who hits the wrong pedal and drives through the wall of a business.

The maximum toll was that aging moron in San Francisco who drove two blocks through a street market, killing about 10 people. And this clown in D.C. wants to get rid of examinations every five years of drivers over 70?

What a maroon!

Agreed.

On the way to lunch yesterday, the classic 'little old lady' was driving with several blue-haired friends trying to navigate one of those turn-about things: two lanes doing a full circle where you can enter or exit at any of 4 places. She was going about 5 mph and flipped lanes 3 times during my go-round behind her. She'd gone round at least 1 1/2 times by the time I finally got out and her two buddies in the back where pointing in different directions last I saw. The driver had a terrified and very confused look on her face. It was sad.

The District also requires drivers over 70 to take vision and medical tests.

Vision tests aren't required for everyone? In Ohio you take the vision test every four years to get your renewal. I've finally been able to convince them that it is a waste of time for me to try to take it first without my glasses.

That should be 71, not 70. He was born in 1936.

If NOW believed in "one free grope," then this bill, I guess, advocates one free manslaughter.
