According to this article off of Drudge, not only did they try to pay her off, but the department decided to charge him with a gorram misdemeanor before the state stepped in to file felony charges.

If that's true, there's a whole lot more that needs to be cleaned up in that department than just one dirtbag.

Oh, and the article also has a priceless typo:

"His bong was set at $70 thousand."

He was one of 100 Chicago police officers who had been hired despite having prior drug or alcohol related driving offenses. Abbate had also been arrested for drag racing and driving on a suspended license.

Huh.

"Until you told me we did not know he had a prior DUI," Ekl said to CBS 2's Dave Savini.

I realize 100 cops is not a large percentage overall in a large police dept like Chicago's, but those having a prior history of bad behavior should be keep on a short rope

This guy was out of control long before he attacked this women

Thanks.

From Drudge: "Another individual came in moments after the attack and attempted to offer the victim money in order for her not to prosecute the defendant," Navarro said."

Yes, there were other cops there. State's atty office says they're looking at obstruction and intimidaitng a witness charges. They might have Alzheimer's though.

I wonder if anyone in the bar would have hit him if they would be facing felony assaulting a cop charge?

If the department is covering for him like this, they would make a persons life miserable for striking a cop, even off-duty, even in the wrong.

Maybe especially if the cop was in the wrong. Big city police departments can be cesspools of corruption and cover-ups.
