His current term isn't up until 2010, but "Snarlin' Arlen" Specter announced he plans to run for a sixth term in the U.S. Senate.
"There are a lot of important things to be done and finally after being here to acquire some seniority, I'm in a position to do that," the 77-year-old Specter told the Associated Press. "I'm full of energy and my wife doesn't want me home for breakfast, lunch and dinner."
If he wins in 2010, Specter will be 86 by the time his term ends. That's kind of young for the geriatric Senate, where Robert Byrd, the former KKK grand wizard and Democratic leader, continues to serve into his 90s. This is also the legislative body where Strom Thurmund served until he was 100.
I don't have a problem with Specter's age. I have a problem with Specter running as a Republican.

"....my wife doesn't want me home for breakfast, lunch and dinner."
She learned...
Arlen Specters presence in the Senate is living proof that Pennsylvanians would vote for a pigs bladder on a stick. And Casey's recent election seals the deal.
Isn't this what our founding fathers had in mind? Senators hanging on to office for 30, 40 years in their bids to be longest serving career politician? Byrd, Kennedy, Kerry, Biden, and Specter are just some of the names that come to mind when I think of guys who should find the honor to finally close up shop and retire.
Maybe they should elect her. Sounds like she has some brains.
Or at any other time, for that matter.
giuliani / specter 2008!
What the hell, they have name recognition.
The only thing you need to know about Specter is that as a junior attorney on the Warren Commission, when the bright boys hit a wall, Arlen thought up the single bullet theory.
They have been paying him off ever since.
Gotta wonder if bush will help him win that election too?
That's cuz he's "All hands Arlen."
Always wanting to try his scottish law technique on her.
After Toomey lost, if principled conservatives had voted for Jim Clymer, we wouldn't have this problem now.
But no, we had to support anything that had an R after it.
Hope he runs as a RAT. Pubbies have too many RINOS as it is. One less won't matter.
Repeal the 17th Amendment.
I thought Toomey was a much better Republican candidate. Specter, like Hagel are a disgrace to the Republican party. Both like the media and they know how to get the spotlight shown on them.
Specter did very little in the way of showing support for Santorum. I bet the GOP now wishes they would have thrown their full support behind Toomey.
I hope Pat Toomey runs again.
