Bill to Ban Regular Light Bulbs Introduced in [U.S.] House
CNSNews.com ^ | 3/21/07 | Nathan Burchfiel

(CNSNews.com) - A Democratic lawmaker has introduced a bill that would ban the sale of traditional incandescent light bulbs - which are less energy-efficient, prompting claims that they contribute to "global warming" - one day after a colleague told a press conference that legislating a ban would be a "last choice."

As Cybercast News Service reported last week, Rep. Don Manzullo (R-Ill.) and Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) held a news conference Wednesday calling for more efficient lighting options, and Manzullo said "the last thing we want to do is force legislation down people's throats."

One day later, Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) introduced legislation that would set target dates for certain types of light bulbs to be prohibited for sale in the United States.

Harman calls the bill "an important first step toward making every household, business and public building in America more energy-efficient."

"This legislation, while a small step, could have an enormous impact," she said in a posting on the liberal Huffington Post blog. "And hopefully, it can help transform America into an energy-efficient and energy-independent nation."

An average traditional incandescent bulb based on a filament emits 12-15 lumens per watt (a measurement of the bulb's lighting output.) Harman's bill would require all bulbs to produce 60 lumens-per-watt by January 2012; 90 lumens-per-watt by January 2016; and 120 lumens-per-watt by January 2020.

Florescent lights wont come on in really cold weather. They would be worthless for outdoor use in the northern states.

True, but LED lights are actually more efficient at lower temperatures.

If given a little more time, the market will provide us with viable alternatives.

I wonder how many elitist liberals understand that this might make it so that the expensive scene lighting system they have in their home won't work.

CFs are fine for some purposes but they aren't the solution to every problem. They don't like cold, enclosed or poorly ventilated fixtures or frequent cycling and they can take minutes to warm up. Oh, and its hard to find ones that match the color temperature of incandescents so mixing them looks lousy.

Am I the only one who has noticed that the warmup time and energy-efficiency strongly encourages people to leave lights on where they previously always turned them off (like bathrooms)? This increases electricity use rather than decreasing it!

Morons.

Sorry null and void. Was just using Friday as an example. I really was not trying to make any religious point whatsoever.

You might have gotten a bad batch then. I know of at least 60 that have been on 24-7 since last summer than have only one failure up to this point. We could never get near that out of incandescent bulbs.

"How about the oven and refrigerator lights? I guess I will have to use my battery-less shake-light led flashlight in the kitchen from now on."

Huh? If your fridge or oven is -20 deg you have more problems than shaking a flashlight will cure.

what you have really said is that elitist liberals will have TWO photo opportunities and a chance to ban stuff TWICE.

They get to own the issue not the solution.

What will they ban next....

I know I hated the Walmart version of Christmas LED lights. I have some Philips that I got for testing that were OK, but I haven't made the conversion to LED christmas lights yet, because I don't really like them.

But the christmas light application is an inexpensive version of what they are working on for real indoor lighting. Most people think it's cool if your christmas lights twinkle :-)

Liberals rarely offer real solutions. They really only want to appearance of them addressing issues. If they actually solved or diminished problems the people would be less likely to feel they needed to depend on the government.

They instead offer solutions that will not solve anything, or simply fight imaginary problems. They then blame the ineffectiveness of their solution on others and say more government interference is needed to overcome the problem.

The purpose of big government is to serve itself, not the people.

No argument from me on that. Rinos are as bad if not worse that RATS. I think that making the package, the light the bulbs put out along with the real economic sense will be much more effective than passing laws.

People who live near the Canadian border go to Canada to buy full-flush toilets. You have to install them yourself, because it is illegal for a licensed plumber to do so, but you can get the full-flush if you want to. Order online today. Or if you can't do that, do what others do and cruise the streets looking for construction and take the old toilets out of the dumpsters. Have a nice day.

It seems to me like the CF bulbs are overrated by about 1 level. A 75 rated matches a 60, a 60 matches a 40, etc.
