'Draft Fred' presidential bid gains steam
Knoxville News Sentinel ^ | 3/20/7 | RICHARD POWELSON

WASHINGTON — All three GOP U.S. House members from East Tennessee are backing the new "Draft Fred Thompson" for president committee, and Bank East in Knoxville will handle its campaign fund.

A filing with the Federal Election Commission shows the committee treasurer is Dean Rice of Knoxville, a former aide to Thompson and Knoxville Rep. John J. Duncan Jr., and that Bank East is the depository.

Duncan and Reps. Zach Wamp of Chattanooga and David Davis of Johnson City are aiding the effort. Davis is the newest addition to the pro-Thompson camp; he earlier had not endorsed a candidate for president. Duncan first was a Mitt Romney booster but has said he will switch to Thompson if he runs.

Thompson, a former U.S. senator from Tennessee and a lawyer, has said he is studying the GOP field of candidates to decide if he should seek the presidency. He acts in the NBC-TV show "Law & Order" and is a substitute on the nationally aired Paul Harvey radio show.

Davis said today that Thompson is very popular in his upper-eastern 1st District and nationally because of his solid conservative credentials and Reagan-like, strong presence and speaking skills.

Davis said he hopes that Thompson decides to run "sooner than later," but he did not have a deadline in mind in aiding the "Draft Fred" committee. The race will be very expensive, a factor that Thompson has to consider in timing his decision, he said.

The current GOP presidential field is not satisfying many of the party faithful, so they are excited about Thompson possibly entering the race, Davis said. On a recent weekend in his district, he said, people talked to him all day about the possibility of Thompson running.

The link to where Thompson stands on the issues shows that Bill Frist is (was) more conservative???

Perhaps he is. So what's your point?

I don't think anyone ever said Frist wasn't conservative, just that he was a weak leader.

Is Thompson an open-borders guy and unfair free-trade? I'm trying to find his stand on the issues. How is he compared to Pence, Tancredo, Hunter?

I like Thompson, but still unsure.

For Fred not to run at this point would be a major letdown IMO.

Thompson is a Secure the Borders guy with a concern that the USA doesn't have another 12-20 million illegals.

He's open as to what to do with the current 12-20 million illegals and he seems to have heard about policies that would 'persuade' these illegals to get back home on their own. IOW he might support attrition policies.

Just some quick stats from the ACU: Lifetime rating: 86. Rating in 2002 when he left Senate: 89. Not bad.

Do you think Newt would consider a veep spot with Fred? A political outsider driving the ship, and a political insider in the engine room?
