Republican officials operating at the behest of the White House have begun seeking a possible successor to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, whose support among GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill has collapsed, according to party sources familiar with the discussions.

We're fine with Gonzales as AG. Not terribly fond of but we're okay. The bigger problem is how easily Bush is on the run from the Dims over something that is utterly inconsequential and perfectly legal.

With Schumer pulling the strings on the New York media it's difficult to come out firing against him.

Point taken that he hasn't changed. I wasn't taking that line although I could have.

I was taking the line - based on the comments that the President is so changed as to be unrecognizable, as that is what this thread mostly contains - that, come on, it's impossible for the "he's totally changed" comments to ring true, as
he couldn't possibly have "so changed" as to casually dump a friend and vital cabinet member just because Schumer et al is declaring war on the administration (again).

There has to be something else, and I think the answer lies among the Congressional Republicans, for which I offered reported examples.

Thanks for your reply. I sent an email to the White House this morning with my comments. I had tried to call them, but either my calls weren't able to be completed as dialed, or I got a busy signal. I'm not sure if it was because the circuits were all busy, or because my digital phone system was having problems.

Did you miss the part where the "real, true" conservatives here on FR demanded no deal with Dubai?

As you know, I never joined in on that and said it was overblown. It was also more of a Dim cause than one for the GOP or conservatives. I recognized their concern. But taken in the context of the overall dangers from terrorism from so many other sources (open borders, international air traffic, easy internal targets), I just didn't see what they were so excited about.

Did you miss the special session of the Senate when they pandered to the Schiavo voters?

I didn't get involved with it either. I think it was a major problem in the elections. Something about that stuck in voters' minds, I think. It made them think the GOP had been in D.C. too long if they were looking stalled in Iraq and had time to intervene in a single medical case in such an unusual way.

Though there was overlap, I considered that the Harriet/Brownie opponents at FR were pretty distinct from the Dubai/Schiavo bunch. The same is true of the activist leadership in both bunches.

But on Gonzales, there is no divide. The entire GOP, except for some weaselly elected RINOs, does not want Gonzales to go. They want Bush and Gonzales to go on the offensive. Caving in now invites further attack. Bush and Rove should know this. This is the time to push back, launch investigations across the board on the Dims, fire the federal prosecutors who have underperformed, and prosecute people like Sandy Burglar and William Jefferson and Harry Reid to the full extent of the law. And pardon Scooter Libby now. Anything less invites the next attack.

I'm still hopeful BushCo will come to their senses and realize the best defense is a good offense. They're going to have to take off the gloves with the Dims and stop being so polite to those corrupt hacks.

Bud you don't have an E'ffing clue what you are talking about when it comes to SecDef Rumsfeld.

Here are some realities regarding SecDef Rumsfeld. It was Rumsfeld who shoved, pushed and dragged the Big Green (Army) into modernization and I'm not talking simply Stryker's and new hats...

It was SecDef Rumsfeld who demanded an alternative Op plan for Stan (after Sept 11th) instead of the ridiculous Op plan demanded by Gen. Shinzeki and the Big Green. As they declared as the only way to be successful...Which called for 5 Divisions and a 6-8 month build up before we would be able to deal with removing the Taliban and al-Qeade from Stan...(and don't forget the 82nd's demand for bowling alley's before they wanted to play)...

It was SecDef Rumsfeld who demanded for all services to integrate and push the priority of CAS (which has saved thousands of U.S. lives to date...and killed thousands more of the enemy)..

It was also SecDef Rumsfeld who has turned our Shooters from SOCOM loose like never before.....and allowed them to rid themselves of risk-adverse OGAs for their own Intel gathering.....It was SecDef Rumsfeld who got SOCOM authorized as its own war-fighting command.....(which of course hurt many feelings in the Big Green...as now they are often tasked as "support" for SOCOM...and not the other way around).

SecDef Rumsfeld supported a light footprint doctrine when it made sense. Both in Stan and for the original phase of OIF it made sense to go with the numbers we went with (and many conveniently leave out the fact that the 4th ID sat off shore because State couldn't pull its d*ck out of its own pants once again and make Turkey cooperate).
