Republican officials operating at the behest of the White House have begun seeking a possible successor to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, whose support among GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill has collapsed, according to party sources familiar with the discussions.

I am at a loss for words.

I'm not.

George is a coward.

Print it large, I'll not apologize for it.

I wouldn't rush to judgment quite yet, there is always a list at hand with ready names of replacements for any position within the White House. There is no need to send someone out to look for someone to replace Gonzales.

Not that anyone would know that...

All I keep hearing is how BUSH messed up...and Brownie didn't waste any time throwing Prs. Bush under the bus, especially to the Dems.

"...and agreed leaving was the best option to make sure we kept on the offensive"

Please educate me. How do you know this was his decision alone and not someone else who made it for him.

When I watched him publicly with Bush and Gates, he did not appear too happy. I saw him get a little choked up.

I did not stay home.

I said he did what was best for the nation. That is not allowing the Dem's to keep the SecDef in hearing rooms after hearing rooms.....when he needs to instead be doing the job of a SecDef at a time of war.

I never said he was happy about it. I am certain he wasn't. But again, if the GOP would have understood the stakes of last election...and put their domestic politics aside (while we were at war)...this nation would be better off today (and SecDef Rumsfeld would still be in that position).

And now, Bush was out of the country, and in the midst of the real problems with the democrats over the war.

The last thing Bush needed was Gonzalez screwing up something as simple as answering the questions about why they fired a few prosecuters.

Gonzalez made a simple act of governance into a major distraction. It's not the first thing he messed up. The FBI totally circumventing procedures isn't completely his fault, but he's been promising that the FBI was under control, and it wasn't, and that broke the past two weeks as well.

We need a strong AG, and Alberto is NOT a strong AG.

Maybe we need Rudy Giuliani.

This thread is like a Rohrschach Test. If you dislike the President this is more evidence that he's a coward; if you hate conservatives it's their fault, etc.

I don't really have an opinion on this one, but it sure seems that everyone here is more interested in blaming their usual enemies than anything else.

Yes, Jefferson's. Even Hassert had a cow.

And notice how, at the time, Pelosi was giving Jefferson the cold-shoulder despite CBC pressure. Now, however, the Democrats are so emboldened that just last week Pelosi was considering putting Jefferson on the Homeland Security Committee.

Jefferson alone should show the GOP what happens when they give in to Democratic demands.

Yes...isn't it ironic...that things like this happen when Pres. Bush is out of the country???

Seems like the minute he leaves...the Dems find SOME major catastrophe that he is responsible for...and then the MSM gets to embarrass and badger him during pressers in foreign countries..

I have never been a fan of AG either...and I think HE is responsible for this, because HE didn't tell the dems to butt out.....but, you sure wouldn't know it by reading this thread.

This is a sad day. I can't wait to get Rudy into the White House. 2008 can't come fast enough for me. Guiliani is a street fighter who will give the Democrats "what for" if they try anything.

If this is true, the White House is again doing something they said we should never do, and that is give in to terrorists.

Bravo! Bears repeating.

I hope the WH sees your comment!

IMHO, I believe they should have held their ground.

Their (dems) present strategy is to have investigation after investigation, hearing after hearing. Apply pressure and demand or force resignations or firings. (I wouldn't give them an inch)

"I fear the GOP is headed for a defeat of Biblical proportions in 2008, because they have turned people like me, their true base, off."

Apparently they've turned more than a few conservatives away too, if one is to look at the 2006 elections.
