If i recall correctly, didn't Rumsfeld give Bush his resignation letter and Bush said no. Then two weeks later he let Rummy leave?

IIRC, Rummy tried to quit twice and the President said forget it. I don't think it was close together, which is to say years between. I do recall thinking "HOO-RAY!" although unfortunately it finally did happen.

Rumsfeld offered to resign several times. Particulary around the Abu Grahib media hysteria.
The President needed Rumsfeld to continue the reformation of the Pentagon.
If I am not mistaken, he is still working on that project.
