More brands added to pet food recall

STREETSVILLE, Ontario, March 19 (UPI) -- Pet food manufacturer Menu Foods of Streetsville, Ontario, has added seven brands to its list of potentially dangerous pet foods.

The manufacturer issued a recall "cuts and gravy"-style cat and dog food brands including Americas Choice, Iams and President's Choice sold at stores across North America after it was revealed that the foods may contribute to kidney failure and death in cats and dogs, ABC News reported Monday.

At least 10 pet deaths have been linked to the recalled foods.

"It's very possible other companies will have to add to this recall," said Louise Murray, director of medicine for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "People need to keep updating themselves."

Kevin Whalen, spokesman for retailer PETCO, said the store has removed multiple foods, including some that were not listed in the recall, to be "extra careful."

"If it was even possible that certain pet food would be involved, we wanted to be safe," he said.

A full list of the recalled products is available at menufoods.com/recall/.

My girl Sarah eats right from the table - with me - and is in no danger, bless her heart! So much for all those geeks who said she should eat dog food.

Menu Foods Inc., based in Streetsville, Ontario, is a major supplier of food under such brand names as Iams, Pet Pride and Eukanuba. It also supplies dozens of private-label store-brand dog and cat foods, including those at major U.S. grocery-store chains, including Foodtown, Food Lion, Safeway Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

Scores of types of wet-food products are involved, which Menu Foods details on its Internet site at menufoods.com/recall. As many as 60 million containers of wet food are reported to be involved in the recall, under 48 different brands of dog food and 40 different brands of cat food.

Is that all you feed them, the chicken? I've always heard that people food would make them sick. Obviously not, from the looks of yours. Maybe it's just a ploy to sell more dog food?

Thanks for posting this. Our five kitties are eating Purina canned food so there shouldn't be an issue. The website says the company doesn't know why this happened. I wonder if some sicko dumped anti-freeze into the "ingredient" before supplying it to the company. That causes renal failure, and almost killed one of our cats many years ago.

The company is working with scientists from Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine to pinpoint the cause. Cornell officials said yesterday they have so far been unable to locate anything in either the food or the tissues of dead animals that would explain causation in the illnesses and deaths.

Menu Foods said Friday that the products in question were made using wheat gluten from a new supplier and that the company now is using a difference source for this material.

Cornell also supplied researchers in the earlier recall case, which began in the fall of 2005 and continued into 2006. In that episode, at least 76 dog deaths across the U.S. were attributed to contaminated food produced by Diamond Pet Foods Inc. In that instance, food had been contaminated by toxic and naturally occurring, produced by fungus on corn and other grains. These produced liver damage, unlike the symptoms in the current recall.

It's Bush's fault. He's trying to kill off the poor that didn't yet starve to death from living off ketchup as a vegetable.

Nah, they don't get sick. They've been eating chicken daily now for 10, 9, 8, 7 years. Thay have access to all the (top-of-the-line) dry dog food they want too.

I don't know what my cat eats. Whatever is cheap. He's looking kind of ragged lately.

It's about time for a new cat anyway.
