The south should give thanks to the sainted martyr Lincoln, who saved the south from ignoble leaders.

More likely someone poorly educated in history who gets sucked in by the simplistic radical Libertarian line that Lincoln was the father of big government.

Unfortunately the 'father of big government' has been with us from the beginning. From the monarchist Hamilton to his 'student' Clay to Clay's lackey follower until even today. Republicans would expand, and have expanded, the national government to proportions unimagined by even the most ardent Federalist.

Apparently Wisconsin teachers have developed a downloadable course unit on Pomeroy. This is something new for me as well. I assumed the Upper Middle West was solid Republican in those days, but Pomeroy must have had some sort of audience there. Pomeroy went on to have a career in the New York Press and the Greenback Party.

A lot of people have the idea that the Copperheads were the conservatives of their day. That wasn't always true. A lot of old radicals and laborites supported the Democrats, and more or less gave some aid and comfort to the Confederacy. David Goodman Croly, a radical married to an early feminist, accused Lincoln of promoting "race mixing." His son, Herbert, went on to be one of the founders of the liberal New Republic magazine.

The South has switched to GOP only recently. Here is a map from the 1976 election

True enough. There were some factors. "Jimmuh" was indeed a southerner, home court advantage. He claimed to be an evangelical, always good in the south. And there was the general disgust with Nixon that rubbed off on Ford even though Ford did not deserve this.

I voted for Ford.

Michael Medved has stated that the only rationale for awarding reparations would be if the payee was the Democratic Party.

Glad I clicked this thread. This is an extremely clever argument -- perfect for stymieing the reparations crowd. I'm going to use it if I get a chance.

Unfortunately the 'father of big government' has been with us from the beginning. From the monarchist Hamilton....

Ya, some Monarchist who took up a musket and bayonet and fought monarchy not with words like the aristocrat of Monticello, but with hot lead and cold steel -- all against very long odds.

Was the 'old' man who relied on Hamilton during war, took his wise advise on financial matters during peace, and looked on him as a son, a monarchist too?

It would only be fair to add him to your list of monarchists as well, since Hamilton never had bit of power or authority that was not through that old man.

Our Revolution would not have lasted a generation if not for Hamilton. Thank God for him.

Lincoln carried Wisconsin 56%-44% in 1864, and got the same 56% in 1860. His numbers were pulled down I suspect by the substantial numbers of Germans in Wisconsin, particularly German Catholics, the latter of which simply didn't vote GOP at all.

Here's links to the definition of payor and payee. IMHO, it only makes sense and is just if the dems are the payors.

I wouldn't assert that he was the father of big government, although that case can be cogently made, but I will assert that, in order to "preserve" the Union, he destroyed the Republic.

Do You mean the hours I work each year that my wages are taken from me and given to someone else? If so I agree.

Equating excessive taxation with Chattel slavery is kind of silly.

If you think DiLorenzo's radical Libertarian propaganda is an accurate picture of the real Lincoln, then you would probably buy Michael Moore's propaganda as an accurate description of the real George Bush.

Go ahead and bet something of value on it.
